Default Helmets

Just an FYI to everyone on helmets, Possibly will not be required since this is a sanctioned race, But I started checking into helmets, I went to a local shop that claimed they sold motorcycle and auto helmets, well the motorcycle helmets fall under a different rating, I know they say DOT & Snell approved but this is not good enough for an official NHRA track (I know this is not an NHRA track). So if you plan to race at one and do not have a helmet that has one of the following ratings, you might be booted off the track.

The NHRA 2010 Rule Book Reads as follows for Helmets and Goggles:
As outlined under Class Requirements, drivers in all classes, including motorcycles, must wear a helmet meeting Snell or SFI Specifications.
SFI Spec 31.1A = Snell SA, open-face helmet
SFI Spec 31.2A = Snell SA, full-face helmet
SFI Spec 41.1A = Snell M, open-face helmet
SFI Spec 41.2A = Snell M , full-face helmet

Effective Jan. 1, 2008, full face helmet mandatory on all cars 9.99 or quicker. See Individual Class Requirements for additional requirements. Shield mandatory 7.49 & quicker.
E.T. cars (13.99 or quicker) must use a helmet meeting Snell 2000, 2005, 2007 or SFI 31.1A, 31.2A, 31.1/2005, 41.1A, 41.2A or 41.1/2005 Specs. Drivers in supercharged, front-engine, open-bodied cars and Funny Cars must wear a helmet meeting Snell SA2000, SA2005 or SFI 31.1A, 31.2A, or 31.1/2005 Specs. See Class Requirements.

Also for people in Texas, if you do not want to order one online, Simpson has an outlet in New Braunfuels, they either have them in stock or will custom make one to your fit. Price is not cheap, starting at $399.00, But hey, it's your coconut...

Good info Moe. I had to rent one at the track yesterday, just need to buck up and but a good one.

How often do these regs change?

Snagged an open faced G-Force helmet off Summit last year. I don't think I'll ever run fast enough for a full faced.

Well the rules themselves don't seem change that often but they seem to add different rules, such as blankets for auto trannies for leakage, I believe now on skinny front runners you use to be able to use the ole Don Garlits special tires, (volkswagen) but now you need true "race" tires for the front..

The weight is what determines that or at least at our track. Thats a damn good rule to have too, people who get away with VW tires are lucky becuase you can seriously frigg some **** up blowing a tire like that at 100mph+.
