Default 04 gto with long head bolts????

so a customer brought us an 04 gto to do heads/cam on. and during disassembly, we noticed the head bolts were the early style. anyone ever run into this? motor is original, only thing i can think of is this is a super early goat that got a leftover f-body motor?

You are correct. The early buuld GTO's with the LS-1's used the early short head bold style block. My car was built in 2003. And uses the earlier block. My wifes 2004 Pulse Red was the last set ofcars off the line. She has the long bolt style block.

Yep, some of the earlier 2004 got the old style block like was said. Mine has a Dec 2003 build date and it's the early block. I've heard that GTO's with build dates up to about May 2004 will have the earlier block.

yup did head cam swap on mine and i had 16 long and like 4 short then 10 really short...the only blocks that have all short are the ls6 blocks....the early model 04 GTOs have the combo of long and short...doesnt really mean anything..just different lengths..

You can tell by the head of the bolts as well. The short bolt has more of a dome shape. The longer bolts have nore of a flat surface with a dimple with 10.9 stamped into it.

GM retooled in Jan of 2005 to get ready for the LS2 so the LS1s made in 05 have the longer bolts.
