What the hell is going on with these synthetic oils? I went to the parts store yesterday here in Florida and was planning on getting 7 quarts of mobile one synthetic 10w30 that I have been using for years now that are usually $3.88 a quart. As I am looking at my selection in advanced auto I notice that there are no quarts of mobile one synthetic 10w30 on the self, only 3 new mobile synthetic types all 8 freakin dollars a quart. I lucked out and there were 2 gallon jugs of my usuall 10w30 synthetic on the shelf. I grabbed those and continued to search through the rack noticing that all I see are mobile extended preformance 15000???? WTF. It says they are good for 15000 miles or 1 year what ever comes first??? I have used mobile clean 5000 several times before but by 3500 to 4000 it looks in need of a change
My question is can you really let it go for that long? At more than twice the price of my typical synthetic oil changes It wont be long before I would have to push it that long due to price alone. I have 4 cars to deal with. Has anyone used these things for that long on a mild or built engine? What are your results?

Ive used amsoil for 20,000 miles. Changed oil filter 3 times, and add alittle oil to compensate for what was in the filter. Never had a problem. A friend of mine runs Conklin in all of his vehicles. Keeps it in for a year no matter the mileage, just changes filters. He has sent his oil out of oil analysis and it comes back with good reports (exactly the specs, im unsure of) but he is now a dealer of Conklin oils. They work good for him. Another friend of mine runs Marvel Mystery oil in his 586 rwhp ws6, with the same results.

I have seen that other parts use way longer change intervals.. I wouldn't push it myself..

With the tech that goes into the synthetics I wouldn't have a problem going 15k on and oil change. I would still change the filter on a regular basis though (I do 5k but I'm all highway). I think I read in a focus owners manual that ford doesn't even recommend changing the oil but every 6.

.... and the countless engines that have been posted up that have more gunk in them than a city sewer. It's real easy. Just use a conventional oil, change it every 3000 miles, treat the engine well by starting it often and running it to operating temperature every time and your engine will live for a very very long time and remain clean.

I always ran Mobil1 for 5K to 6K miles. My LT1 was really clean when I opened it up. I ran an Amsoil oil for 10,700 miles once in my 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4.7L V8, and it was pretty much done based on the used oil analysis. Personally, I don't think I would feel comfortable running any oil to 15K, especially without testing it to find out how it's holding up.

i run castrol and change it every 3k in the camaro and the f350 v10. in the cobalt i change it when it gets to 20%. my truck does a ton of heavy towing and i beat on the camaro engine pretty hard. i think when they say 15k its on normal driving conditions if your hard on the car you should change it earlier.

depends on the oil. the guy with 45 on his durango lives in the desert and drives it like a dick through said desert. he sent it back for a test at 45 (this was about a year ago idk if hes changed it yet) and they said it was near perfect viscosity

15k on a quality oil is a no brainer. My F-350 diesel currently has 39k on the oil, with the same filter as when the oil went in. Last sample (37k) said it was good to go. With Mobil 1, I'd recommend sampling at 10k intervals until the analysis said it was time to change it.

SS RRR, you've obviously never been in an engine that was using a true high quality oil and extended drain. No gunk. If you use a commodity oil, plan on lots of gunk.

i dont know maybe i just haven't caught up to modern times. i remember back when i was 15 or 16 years old i had to help my father rebuild the engine in his gmc. we changed the oil every 3k on that truck and it only got mobile synthetic. truck had 70k on it and the engine had so much sludge inside i had to scrape it off with a small putty nice and put it in a bucket that was in the Vally. he towed a large horse trailer that held 4 horses and a 24 foot formula . that was pretty much enogh to convince me not to screw around with my oil its just not worth it.

I think saying 15K on a quality oil is a no brainer is oversimplifying things. I ran one of Amsoil's better oils to 10,700 miles. Based on the UOA, running it to 15K would have been a no brainer, as in lack thereof.

My wife has an aunt who is married to a man who is pretty well off. He's pretty well off because A) he worked hard all his life; and B) he's CHEAP!!!!

The aunt inherited several thousand dollars a few years back, and along with some money she had saved, she wanted to buy herself "one nice car before I die". She looked around, and wound up buying herself a 325xi BMW.

Her husband, "Mr.Cheap-***", got all bent out of shape, because she bought such an expensive car...$28,000. Anyway, no sooner does she get the car, he's studying the owners manual, and first he's frowning, as he reads the car needs synthetic oil....$$$$. Then his eyes brighten, as he reads that you only have to change the oil every 7500 miles, or something like that.


The part he didn't read, is it's 7500 miles IF you're doing a majority of highway driving, where the car ALWAYS gets warmed up, every time it goes out. 99.9% of the driving their car sees, however, is 1-1.5 mile hops to the store, church, a nearby restaurant.... He's adamant about changing the oil ONLY at 7500 miles. The car is now 9 years old, and had 6 oil changes.

They're killing the car!!

Ok wow I guess I really have not caught up with the times or the facts so I am going to read up on the site posted (Thankyou) and see what I have been missing. It would be nice to only have to do it once or twice a year.

you guys ever think that the auto manufacturers want you to change your oil every 10k-15k miles so you'll buy a new car sooner, like when yours takes a crap..i dont think a pushrod engine can make it that long sludged up..

i have used mobile1 5w30 for years, and a couple times i have went over 4500 miles on an oil change, and i can tell by looking at the oil and feeling it, it is dirty/contaminated.. i have always used wix, ac-delco or mopar and k&n filters..

yep engines are better now, so longer service intervals make sure the engine wears out and your in the market for a new car sooner... ...it's a conspiracy...

Call me an old fart, but in 31 years of driving, and 10 cars, putting from 50k to 160k miles on each one, I have always used nothing but dino oil and changed it every 3-5k miles. I have never, ever had an internal engine problem with a single vehicle I have owned. I just don't see what the extra money of synthetics gets me that I don't already have.
