Gen 5 Camaro External Bolt-On Tech - Thinking about trading my '10 SS for a Vette... Input??

scottyk246

Ok here's the deal. I got my car in December and did the cam, exhaust, CAI, etc. at under 1,000 miles. She put down 475 rwhp right after the mods, now that it's got 4000 miles it does feel a bit stronger but anyway... I find myself wanting a C6 more and more. Can't really explain it other than I've never had one. I don't dislike my car at all, but I can't afford both so here's what I'm thinking - I found this C6 about 6 hours from home. It's a 2007 fully loaded 3LT Z51 car, every option available. It has 18,000 miles and has receipts for $37,000 worth of work at Specter Werkes back in '07 or '08. It has the LS2 stroked to 6.6L with a fully forged bottom end, worked over LS6 heads, cam, LG longtubes and Corsa full exhaust. The guy is claiming 586rwhp but he's just a car salesman, I told him maybe 586 at the flywheel but definitely not at the wheels with that combo. It also has a hood with heat extractors, Forgeline wheels, Stoptech brakes and lots of carbon fiber.

I'm having some issues giving my ~6 month old car with a few mods + cash for a 3 year old car, but it is a Corvette, and while the $37,000 worth of mods from Specter may be over priced, it's still a beautiful car.

I'm just looking for input, I haven't really researched the value of used Corvette's, I'm hoping somebody can give me some insight as to whether this would be a good deal or not. I know ultimately it will be up to me to decide if I'd really rather have the Vette than my car, I just want to know everybody's thoughts on the financial aspect of it.

I'd post pics of my car, but I don't have any on my computer and I'm away from home but just imagine a 2010 2SS/RS in IOM with the flat black hockey stripes and the polished wheels, orange interior and both cars are M6's. Here's the C6:

If it were me, Hell Yes. But then I have my sights on a 2007 or newer vette anyway. For what there asking for the 2010 SS you might as well have the vette. The only problem your going to run into now is trade in. I don't know what you paid for the camaro but I'd bet money your gonna be upside down pretty good on the trade in, probably to the tune of $8K or better. I realize you have low miles and its a 2010 but from a dealer standpoint its still a used car now and they're going to rape you on the trade in.

If your gonna be upside down on your loan I wouldn't do it. That's a hole I never wanna revisit again.

scottyk246

Not really. I paid $37k and change, right at sticker and have $3-4k in mods and they're giving me $35k

I would only trade if it were a 08 or newer w/ low miles. The Dealership were i got my 10 SS has 2010 Vette's for $41,876 that is a great deal and i have seen low mile 08 Vette's going for low $30's.

scottyk246
06-27-2010, 04:57 PM
It has 18,00 miles, and with the upgrades and whatnot I think it should be worth it. Just trying to convince myself to do it.

blk/slvr02ss
06-27-2010, 05:06 PM
Yea,i know were your coming from.I have been thinking about getting a 08 Vette but do not want to get ride of my 10 for 1 and loose my ass on my car.But i know a Full bolt-on 08 Vette A6 will run low 11's high 10's on drag radials.Do they have all the paper work for thay Vette showing what has been done ?

scottyk246
06-27-2010, 05:18 PM
I hear ya but I really don't think I'll be posing my ass. And the car is actually very well documented. All receipts and paperwork, as well as all original parts. Hood, wheels and tires, exhaust, brakes, etc.

blk/slvr02ss
06-27-2010, 05:26 PM
Then get off your ass and just do it and stop thinking about it and get it over with before it stresses u out.So its a little older that will be the only delema but u will still have a Vette in the end.

GatorFan08
06-27-2010, 05:33 PM
Post pics of your camaro. The corvette is very nice, however I'm a HUGE camaro fan. If I were you I would keep the Camaro. For one, its BRAND new, you know whats done to it, and you know how its been treated. This vette could fall apart and then you would really be in a mess.

Brand new maro > Used vette

blk/slvr02ss
06-27-2010, 05:45 PM
I would go down there and see if u can take it for a day test ride and then decide. The only part that would bother me is getting a older car when i have a brand new one.My car is paid for but i know if i traded it in on a 08 Vette they would want a couple of grand or more plus my car for one but if they said even trade i would most likely do it in a heatbeat depending on miles.

scottyk246
06-27-2010, 05:46 PM
It actually looks just like blk/slvr02ss's car. I don't have any pics on my computer and I'm in San Diego on business and live near Chicago. The corvette is in Indiana. I'll grab some pics when I get home. I'm not really stressing about it, if I don't do it I'll be happy enough with my car for now, and something else will come up eventually. Where were they selling brand new vette's for under $42k?

blk/slvr02ss
06-27-2010, 05:59 PM
It was a Memorial Day weekend sale @ Dyer Chevrolet in Vero Beach, Fl.I guess they were just base models but shit that was cheap and i was tempted but dont want a payment.

Lethal Z
06-27-2010, 06:05 PM
If you paid $37K and there offering you $35K for your 2010 you need to back away from the computer right now and go down there because that is unheard of. Typically when you drive off the lot you lose 20-25% of the cars value right off the bat. You always lose money on mods when you decide to trade it off so thats nothing new. But the car your looking at has mods so its not a real loss, your actually making out there too. If your sure there gonna give you that much for your SS I'd do it in a heat beat.

scottyk246
06-27-2010, 06:28 PM
That's kinda what I'm thinking. And like I said, I paid sticker for the car but the truck I traded in on it I got for almost $13k off sticker. Drove it for almost a year and traded it on the SS for $2500 more than I paid for it.

Carter01
06-27-2010, 06:29 PM
No brainer, the Vette. You keep waiting around and it will be gone.

Where I'm from you can get 3 pulls on the dyno with a/f for $75. Get the salesman to let you test drive it for an afternoon, setup a dyno session locally, go get a few pulls and see if what the receipts say are done to the car are true? While it's on the dyno totally inspect the car underneath (if a drive on style) and make sure all is legit. If the car does what they say it does and it has been well taken care of go for it! For the money and trade in value you are getting and a MUCH faster car this decision wouldn't be hard for me! Good Luck!

I saw pics of the underside and it's legit. Plus Specter Werkes is a pretty reputable shop.

Suggested retail on a fully loaded 07 Vette m6 w/18.000 is $41,125 plus everthing done to the car makes it well worth it.Whoever traded that car in loss there ass on it.I would take it that the motor is a 402 w/ worked LS-2 heads.Did the paper work say what cam ?

scottyk246
06-27-2010, 06:59 PM
Yeah dude that traded it totally got raped. LOL glad it wasn't me. It has worked LS6 heads and a Lingenfelter spec Comp cam, I don't know the exact specs on it yet but I'm working on getting the rest of the info. Here's the link to the package from Specter : http://www.spectergtr.com/engine-packages/c6-corvette-ls2-2005-2007/c6-corvette-ls2-403-cid-2005-2007/403-cid-ls2-525-hp

$18,000 for that motor + all the other stuff done to the car.Whoever own that car spent a lot of money and lost his ass.I dont think u can go wrong w/ that car and u can still sell the factory stuff. What did he trade the car in for a ZR-1.

scottyk246
06-27-2010, 07:12 PM
Um, I'm not sure. It's at a high end used car dealer now. He's got Lambo's, Ferrari's, Mercedes' and the like. He's also a Mallett Corvette and Panoz dealer so there's no telling what the guy traded for.

scottyk246
06-27-2010, 09:04 PM
Oh and one more kinda cool thing about the car is it was the cover and feature car of the '08 Corvette fever magazine, and comes with a mag. I tried to look up the article but I can't seem to find it anywhere.

The C5 and C6 Corvettes are so much lighter than the new Camaro's plus the Vette's 60ft extremely well. I'd do the swap and don't look back.

I take it this is the Corvette.

Well it seems to be almost unanimous... I guess I'll be driving a Vette by the end of the week! The guy is pretty cool too, I'm going to take the title for my car and my Hummer down, load up all of the stock parts and drive the Vette home and he's got my car sold already so he'll just have his shippers pick my car up at my house! Pretty sweet deal actually. My only reservation was the whole trading my '10 for an '07 and throwing cash in on the deal...

I can't give you a bias opinion as I've never driven a newer Camaro. However, I had an LS2 C6 and loved it. That car looks super clean. I think you'll be happy with the trade.

scottyk246
06-29-2010, 01:45 PM
I really do like my car, however the lack of back seat room often makes me wonder why I didn't go for the C6 in the first place. I guess I just had such a hard on for the new Camaro and was itching to mod an LS3 I just pulled the trigger. It's definitely a nice car, just didn't fill the void I was hoping it would.

And he's definitely honoring my trade, hell he's got it sold already and the guy wants the car this weekend! So I'm heading down either Thursday evening for an early morning Friday deal, or Friday morning and coming back in the afternoon.

I really never chime in on threads but I just got done reading yours and by the way you talk about the vette you can tell thats what you really want. So if I were in your shoes and felt the same it would be a done deal. But anyways good luck friday and try not to get any tickets.

Man, I've been wrestling with this same decision. I really like the new SS and want one bad, but I just came from a bolt on C5 with a 150 shot and I'm afraid that I would need 600 FWHP in the Camaro, just to be as fast as my 'vette was. The only reason I'm even considering the Camaro is because I have 2 little ones now and would like to be able to take everyone out in it once in a while. Reading your thread makes me think I should just go for the 'vette and keep the kids in the DD.

Anyway, I think you're making the right choice and will be happy as shit with the 'vette!

Just remember we tend to abuse our cars. That car looks awesome and I'm sure you'll enjoy it, I just hope you won't see some major problem down the road... Like an axle snapping or some engine failure.... I'm assuming there's no warranty so yeah...

scottyk246
06-29-2010, 11:51 PM
Yeah I hear what you're saying. But it has a warranty on the work that's been done as well as a GM extended warranty on everything else. I bought my SS new and modded it, but I haven't ever REALLY beat on it, I mean we all drive spiritedly, but if we didn't want that we'd be driving Honda's or something along those lines.

I would say yes if it was not black. You will dive yourself insane watching the paint get torn up over the years after spending that kind of money. And while you could just repaint down the road it will never be the same as when you first got it. So either don't get it or look for a bit longer for an equally bad ass combo in a different color.
