Question Number SIX alternator

Number 6 alternator

My first altn. died and my exciter wire was not reading battery voltage…my friend cut the wire for the plug and jumped it to my fuse panel-engine control fuse to read actual battery volts.

questions are:

Is the stock exciter wire fused?

What is the wire voltage suppose to be?

Can I leave the wire jumped or do I need to get the exciter wire redone?

I charges like it is.

I fried two cause the ground strap hit them....dumb i know.

so there is the first three lol.

fourth i dunno why it fried. maybe pwr str was starting to leak and i did not know.

fifth was pw str fluid leak.

sixth is installed now.

so just covering all bases not want to put number seven on.

HELP

read exciter wire needs a keyed 12v source which it currently does have so as long as its not fused i should be fine as is....

anyone know?

my friend had a problem with his swap car due to this, it needs to be a 5 volt source...12v freaks it out apparently

I might be mistaken but this is what I remember

that is likely, I've heard of people using a light bulb to reduce the voltage

I'm having issues with charging as well... The system was fine, but my bearings in the alternator were screaming, so I picked up a truck alternator from a junk yard that was certified prior to buying it. During the removal of the factory alternator, I was stupid and forgot to disconnect the battery and arc'd the terminal on the factory alternator to ground. I disconnected the battery, removed the old alternator, installed the truck alternator, plugged in the exciter harness, connector the positive terminal, got everything back together including the battery, and started the car and I have zero charging.

I checked the exciter wire, and with key on, engine off, I'm getting 10 volts, key on, engine on, I'm getting 12 volts.

I've pulled the truck alternator, and I'm going to take both alternators and have them checked, but is there anything I'm missing here? My gut feeling is I popped a fuse somewhere, but I checked the fuses, and they all seem to be fine. I checked the grounds and they all seem fine as well.

Thanks.
