Default '93 Z/28 Starting issues.

I'm new here, been a lurker for a time, and since i got a problem with my Lt1 Camaro i thought it would be Ok to post a thread to this section.

The other day it was pouring down rain in my town for about a whole day, and my Camaro was outside this day. The next day i went out for a drive, and started the car. it responded and ran to 800 rpm for about a 1/2 -1 sec. (idle speed is at 1100 rpm) and now it just starts and starts. Does anybody of you master mechanics have a clue what's bothering my Camaro.

If i'm not clear on things and you need more info please ask.
Best regards.

Haven't checked yet, The Opti is new along with the Autolite 106 sparkplugs, the sparkplug wire's are on the list of things that need to be changed. The coil is Msd. How can i check if these things are OK. ?

I'm new to the world of these LT1/4 engines.

Best regards

Opti shouldn't get soaked in the rain unless you're either driving in it and go through a huge puddle, or you don't have a hood, or you park your car in a ditch that fills up with water when it rains Could be something else. Check stupid things first (make sure a wire didn't fall off or anything).

check the coil like mentiond above, Pull a plug wire off and stick a screw driver in the end of the plug wire and hold it away from something metal about a half inch then have someone turn the car over and it should spark between the screw driver and the metal if it dosent u have no fire (Make sure u hold the handle of the screw driver or u may get shocked lol )

Did you check the gap in the plugs before you installed...I took mine out and checked and they were .60 instead of .45 to .50 which fouled the plugs

No not yet, that's a thing to consider, if fouling the plugs, would that be a reason for the car not to start ?

Best regards

It depends on how may are fouled I fouled mine by not driving it and letting it idle after I got the new motor....I had to push the pedal down to get the car to start

And the only way to fix that is to take the plugs out and gap them to .045"/.050" or are they ruined and do i have to buy new ones ?

Best regards.

no you can re gap them as long as they are not fouled out you can clean them as well. Or if you don't feel right just change them

Hello guys, today i got the peace o crap running again. just held the accelerator open and it lived... for a few minutes. then it died, it was like it did a huge backfire. at least the engine died. That made me wonder if there might be any water in the distributor or at least some humidity inside the cap, witch might be letting the distributor do a crossfire between cylinders, Tomorrow hopefully i'm going to take the optispark out and check it, the only thing i need to get it out are these reversed torx screws out... Has anyone been there where i'm right now ?

Best regards.

So did you check for a constant spark coming out of a plug when you cranked it over...if you didn't do that, you might be wasting your time. Also check all of the fuses. If you are holding your foot the floorboard and it starts, that means it is flooded, so something is up with the fuel, not the optispark. If this happens, try turning the key and cranking it over right away, don't allow the key to sit in the on position.

I think it is an E8 socket to remove the optispark, the last time I did that was in 2007 to put new gaskets in the timing cover.

I just needed to keep the foot on the floor on the first start, after that it just fired right away. until it began to crossfire/missfire. Now it runs like ****, it's like it's just giving spark to the cylinders in no particular order. and it also backfires. when i try to start it ???

Thanks.

Well it only took 1/2 hour to get to the point where i'm now, remove the opti at least the cap, just haven't had time. Anyways i'm going to check the plugs and wires also. The thing i don't understand is why suddenly after a bit of a drive, it starts to run like a jerk, sputtering, and what seem's to be crossfire. thus it's like it's not going after the original firing order. I'm lost here, but am going to take the opti out tommorow and check if there's any water/humidity inside the cap.

Best regards.
