My rear diff cover is rust

i had a bad pinion seal leak. so mine was just coated and caked with oil.
1) strip every thing off the axle brakes lines, brake calipers ect.
2)so i first had to clean it up i started with gunk heavy duty engine cleaner took 2 cans and a scrub brush. then i cleaned it with dawn dish detergent. though por15 make a marine cleaner that i heard works well.
3)next i hit it with a some sand paper the point here is to not make the metal shiny its to knock off the heavy rust a wire brush will work just as well. ( you could have it sandblasted if you have the money)
4) just apply por15. the por 15 is meant to be paint on top of light rust and ruff surfaces so you dont want to sand it smooth and you dont want to put any type of primer on just put the por15 after knocking off the heavy flaking rust if there is any.
i have used por 15 for at least 10 year the first thing i put it on was my 69 corvette frame and it still on there even when the powder coating came off the trailing arms. i have used it on tractors and every that metal. i have used it on sandblasted items and rusty items and never had it come off. just don't put it on existing paint.

You could always pop off the diff cover, clean it up with some sandpaper, wire wheel, or 3M stripping wheel, and get it powder coated. Powder coating is extremely durable, and you've got some options when it comes to colours. Just another option for ya...
Just make sure to get ALL the rust off BEFORE you paint. Some epoxy primer would be a good idea on the bare metal as well, as it will "seal" the bare steel, and hold off rust better than just paint will. Just make sure to sand the epoxy before you spray your colour.

you can get it in different color and in flat and gloss. i went with a gloss black. the big thing with por15 if its in the sun it needs to be painted over.
being your painting an axle it doesn't need to be painted over.
