Arrow Fast guys running a T56 come in!!! - Sub 11 second

What kind of parts are you guys with fast T56 cars running in your transmissions? I'm particularly interested in hearing from guys running in the 10s and quicker with heavy cars that ET well. IE not running a 10.80 at 135 MPH. I'd really like to hear from Taner

As of right now my T56 has your typical parts:
-Viper main shaft
-Carbon blocker rings
-Billet 3-4 synchro keys
-Bronze fork pads 1-4
-Steel 3-4 fork

Last time I had my car out it was running 7.30s in the 1/8 (should be around 11.40s-50s). When I got to the track, the transmission was working fine and quiet. After about 8 passes, it was starting to whine but still working fine. This was a month ago and as of now it still works fine. It only whines when the input shaft is spinning, so it must be the contact of the teeth on the input shaft and the countershaft meshing with each other.

I called D&D to ask them about it and they said the input and countershaft are probably worn and need to be replaced. I am wanting to know if stock ones on my only option, or if there is a better part available? I have a different motor now and should be running well into the 6 second (10 second) range. My car is heavy at 36-3700lbs and I want to 60' well into the 1.4x range. I want to use the right parts the first time and have my transmission hold up as long as possible, so I want hear what the people with experience have to say. I'm expecting the transmission to need fixed shortly after this powerful new motor goes in the car

Stock gears are your only option unless you want to replace 1st-4th gears with a matching cluster gear.

Alright, well to add to my questioning... How many passes are fast cars getting out of the stock input shaft, countershaft?

Shoot, my car ('00 SS) has had many 10-second passes on the stock T56 w/ no problems. Tranny is finally getting upgrades at almost 140k.

I'm one of them.

Stock trans took over 400 passes, most of those in a few different 10 second setups. Including H/C+ Nitrous, and 2 H/C setups. I swaped it out now, but it never gave me a problem.

7000rpm launches and 7000rpm shifts for over 100 passes with 1.4x short times. If you can drive, you can do it on a stock trans. Otherwise your recipe looks good to me.

Who did your last rebuild and what shim specs did they use on the input shaft?

FWIW, I just picked up a new front plate for the next SSR-hybrid build, and noticed the input shaft and countershaft bearing race pockets have revised (improved?) fluid funneling channels.. It might be worth the extra $200 to try a new front plate if you're investing that much $$ into the motor..

Yours is really the one I was referring too when I said a few guys have gotten along with stock ones. I am a big fan of your car.

It was built by and bought from D&D originally. When I got my hands on it, it needed a new 3rd gear blocker ring so I took it apart, replaced the blocker ring, 3-4 synchro keys, and the fork pads and just put it back together and have been running it since. More of a fix than a rebuild. I didn't even check the end play or check to see which shims were in it. This was last August and I put a lot of passes on it between then and when it started whining. I never had bias ply slicks on it, and the first time I ran them I was 60' a tenth quicker than I normally had and that is when the whining came.

Do you have any pictures of that front plate? Just want to see if there is any reason you couldn't modify the fluid channels on your own on the original style plate. Are they just revised or are they in a different location?

http://www.eecis.udel.edu/~davis/z28...935_large.html

I guess more on the Input than the countershaft.. The whole area around the pockets is sunken and the input pocket has a raised "windage" scraper and enlarge fluid channels..

Thank you sir.

It is possible to go fast on a stock trans, but many things contribute. One poor clutch choise, or one miss adjustment on the master cyl. and I would have been rebuilding my trans.

The parts list looks good, what clutch, master and shifter do you plan on running?

The clutch, type of tire and weight of car play huge roles in determining how well a T56 or any other manual transmission holds up behind high powered cars.

Sounds like yours has served you very well. As of right now I have been running a Textralia 0Z700 clutch with a billet flywheel, Tick master, and Hurst billet plus shifter. Everything has been working well so far.

I'm running the MT ET Drag 28x10.5 stiff sidewall tires.

Did you get an aproximate cost on having these replaced?
My built tranny just started whining last week.
EXPENSIVE! D&D sells the input shaft for $200 and the countershaft for $500 or $600. How long do these parts typically last on a fast car?

Stock trannys are pretty stout. I have a stock rebuild in mine, and it went 42 passes last year alone, 11.01-10.95 1.42-1.44 60's.... I would be more worried about the clutch, rear, driveshaft and suspension.
