Default confusion on stall converters

A little confused about stall converters -

I've read many posts that say if you have an automatic trans, getting a 3200-3600 stall is a great mod.

But then I've read a lot of posts that say if you get a stall that high, but you drive under the stall number, your transmission will heat up without a transmission cooler. This heat will make the fluid break down, and your transmission will eventually go out.

Which is correct? A great mod or a dangerous one?

A great mod, get a cooler with a fan on it (100-120.)
if running under lock up speed (45-50 mph) trans will heat up but cooler should keep it safe
you will enjoy stall , and wonder why you did not do it sooner
I ran yank st 3500 for 8 years now yank ss 4000, may go to a 4400,
I am cam/gears/ boltons

Yup, like was said. It is basically mandatory to put a bigger/better cooler in when doing a stall. Hell, even before the stall, a good cooler wont hurt!

as stated " Hell, even before the stall, a good cooler wont hurt!"
running 4l60/ vac mod( been into several times because of hot lapping-heat) just added another cooler/fan
running 3.73/10bolt/locker for now, 4.10 /9"/locker waiting on the side

Get a cooler bro. Frank at Performabuilt says if you don't put one in after a Tranny purchase it will void your warranty. So they have to do something good lol

Would it matter if the trans was a 4L60e or a TH400? Or the same principles apply?

I've heard good things about the B&M 70264.

Yea you will be fine if you get a good cooler like the B&M listed above. And it would also be a good idea to get a good tranny temp gauge too. I have an Autometer elec. and I like it.
