I have a 02 M6 trans am. The guy I bought the car from was saying something about this car has a better rear end. Was there any other factory options for the rear end? I know they're all 10 bolts but something about a auburn rear end comes to mind. He said this car is not an auburn, it's something else. Would someone please help me find some basic info on that?

Theyre are choices to upgrade the carrier and the posi they dont make it much stronger as far as handling much more power, but its a little safer if you stay on street tires with basic bolt ons

How do I know what I have exactly in my rear end?

you could poossibly pull the diff cover and drain everything and look and see. If not its gotta come out and apart so you can see part numbers. Im not exactly sure how you would tell, i just know there were upgrades you could to to a 10 bolt

It was either the auburn or something else with "m" I think? I have the 2002 brochure at home. It should be in there, I don't know why I didn't think of this earlier. Thanks

Early Cars had Auburn's later cars have Torsen's. My `98 has an Auburn with 144K miles, although I did replace gears (I broke them) the differential is still holding strong.

As far as factory options there is the Auburn and Torsen.

The easiest way to tell the difference is to jack the rear tires off the ground, with the trans in park, or a manual trans in gear, spin one tire.

With an Auburn the other tire will spin the same direction, with the Torsen the other tire will spin the opposite direction.

The only other factory rear end option was an AAM aluminum cover that directs more oil to the axle tubes for better cooling and lubrication.

That's what I was trying to find out (factory options) Thanks!
