Street Racing & Kill Stories - 89 zr1 goes down

My friends dad has a 1989 zr1 lt5 vette. Long story short we lined up and went from a dig,he spun worse than i did but i had half car on him until 95 when he came around. Needless to say i was very surprised i expected to get massacred. What do the lt5's usually run? I know he's not the best driver out there because ive rode with him in it before lol. My stall is going in next week then were going again. Should this have happened???

If memory serves, they run around mid/high 12's @ 112-115.. pretty sure. Good run

wow your buddies dad has one rare car there. Only 83 produced in 1989 which none were sold to the public. I saw two go on Barrett-Jackson in Scottsdale, one for $128k and the other for $140k.
And yup like Jayplay said, average high 12's to low 13's, mid 12's stock have been done though.

I believe they are mid 12 second cars stock, but im not 100% on that.

The early ones were rated lower I think for HP at 375

89s are not on the street. The way to spot one is it will have the older dash. Its most likely a 90.
Zr1s are weird from 90-95. Some run fast-others don't. It doesn't matter if its the 375HP one or the 94-95 one with 405. Some LT5 guys say it because the cams are not degreed who knows.
My best time in one not touched is 12.80 at 113 MPH at Cecil. They are so undergeared.... Gears, custom prom tuned for the car and full exhaust with drs usually means low low 12s at almost 120MPH. They are sick sick cars

I called him it is a 90. Either way i can't believe i stayed ahead of him that long.

"Driver Mod". Good job of making him sweat the first 6-7 seconds of your race. Morris is absolutely correct on the ZR1's: I've seen guys work hard to get low 13's, then seen other not so good drivers hit consistent mid-high 12's with identical stock ZR1's. Well placed mods (chip, gears, exhaust, tires) makes them scream (7,500rpms) to high 11's in good air at a good track. Fast as hell for a daily driven street car 'back in the day'. I still remember the insane bench racing that went on when the C5 Z06 came out and finally supplanted the ZR1: akin to the 5.0 GT smack talking going on now.

there's one for sale at a used car lot right up the road from me, i never even stopped to look at the price because i hate the look of c4's. but i also didnt know they ran that quick. but on the other hand i have a ported l92 headed 408 02 camaro, so why waste my money on a cool car that i dont care for the looks of. but maybe someone on here that's within a few hours of where i live i could get some info on the car, the year and price.

Nice kill OP!
My '95 went high 12's at 113-114 bone-stock all day long. With BFG 315-17" drag radials and nothing else it wen't a best of 12.4; high 11's with intake, LT's, mid-pipe, gears and Doug Rippie chip.

I'm confused.
How did the vette go down if he came around you before the race was over? It sounds like a honorable death to me.

Those ZR1's can be fast. I knew a guy that had one with the LPE 415/610 kit. Ran 10's on street tires.

The LT4 cars were just as quick... (My '96 Grand Sport Conv't. went 12.9 -13.0@ 113-114 ABSOLUTELY STOCK. Stock tires too.) The LT5 motors were VERY fragile. Broken piston skirts with even a 100 shot were a matter of when... not maybe. The LT4 was a torquier motor with pretty good top end.
Who puts the starter in the valley anyways???!!!!??? lol
$12k gits ya an LT4 car... with a 125 hit you're makin' money if you can stick it. Just have to deal with the optispark crap.

Don't know where youu got your info, but LT5's were bulletproof. Look at all of the endurance records they set. some of which are still standing I believe. It not only is common, but expected to hit 150,000 miles on a hard driven LT5 without any notable problems.

Don't know where you got that from, LT5's aren't the least bit fragile. As for power, your typical LT5 would put down around 350-ish. An LT4 would be lucky to see 300 at the tires. It took a very skilled driver to get an LT4 vette into the 12's, where as an LT5 could do it all day on a good track.

Every dyno I've seen is between 290-300rwhp, but I see your point. Realistically, I will end up getting an LT4... but if you put both of them in front of me, the ZR1 would be irresistible

ZR1's are cool, I hate c4's but I'd rock that shit.
High 12's in an LT4 is possible, but trapping 114 I'd like to see a timeslip for that. I would guess trap's to be 110 in perfect weather.

Best I have seen an LT4 hardtop go is 108-109 MPH traps stock. Call BS on that too. Though a 96 6 speed Vette is def a better sleeper than aZR1. ALL 96s with sticks had LT4s. With same mods on both LT5s pull away from LT4 big time. Fragile? No way....

You know that 99% of people can't tell them apart. I can tell a ZR1 from a regular Vette from the front/side/rear from 100yds, but that's because I have been obsessed with Corvettes for the past ~12 years.

I'm calling :bs: on that trap speed. The ET is doable with good driving, but those numbers are either a modded car with no tracion or a stock car run on a G-Tech :engarde:

Irun11s I too can spot one a mile away. Flared back with the third brake light at the top is the dead giveway along with those 1/2 mile wide rear tires......
They sound nuts at WOT too with aftermarket mufflers....

Yep, if nothing else the third brake light gives it away. I have never been so frustrated as when I saw an LT1 Vette driver with ZR1 badges on his car... it's worse than a GT driver with Cobra badges.
