Default crank without reluctor wheel

I was looking at a crank to buy. The guy said it doesn't have a reluctor wheel and one can't be added. What exactly does the reluctor wheel do and how do you operate without it?

basically reluctor wheel gives the computer the crank position. u could use an external crank trigger in place of the reluctor wheel. don't ask me how u would get that signal 2 work with your ecu.

you can install it, but you have to install an external crank position sensor because without it the computer will FAIL. won't run. The computer uses crank position sensor for timing..if it doesn't exist you have a propblem. I dont know what an external kit will cost, but if you don't know how it works or what it costs...probably shouldn't buy it.
