How do you get a crank setup to work without a reluctor wheel? I know its setup on intense road racing cars but how does it work? Could that be run on a daily driver very well?

I know on carb'd ls cars they use a crank trigger with an aftermarket ignition unit.

got to have a reluctor wheel for fuel injection.Only way to run without one is a distributor and carb

^^ True unless you go with an aftermarket ECM that supports an external crank trigger

Would you mind explaining a little more into what an external crank trigger is and what type of ECM would support that? Can you give me a link to the parts that I would be looking at? How much more expensive would this be than a normal setup?

your looking at three grand or more for a crank trigger and a new engine management system that suports it

You are still running a relcutor wheel, just in a different place.
There is no way for any spark ignited engine to run without the ignition knowing crank shaft position, a wheel and sensor mounted on the crank, cam, or in the distributor (even points ignitions have a wheel opening and closing the points) all do the same thing.

yes i know i am im just answearing his question instead of beating around the bush by the way mine uses a reluctor wheel still he was wanting a price and is you have to use that stock piece

Megasquirt is $500 for an assembled unit w/ harness and supports an external trigger.

This is what a crank trigger on a LS motor looks like. (the red reluctor wheel in the front of the crankshaft with the pickup on the left) It uses 4 magnets to trigger an aftermarket ignition box and makes things alot more simple to understand than the 50 some odd signals a turn todays ls engines use.

The problem is that that external crank is run for a carborated setup not a fuel injection setup.

An OEM setup might not run with a crank trigger but a Big Stuff 3 or a FAST will wont it? It sends the same magnetic pulses that a distributor sends. They do recomend a computer controlled distributor where applicable but I dont think it is mandatory.

Yes it is mandatory, as the EMC is controlling the spark advance. A non computer distributor can be used, but the mechanical advance needs to be locked out and the vacuum advance disconnected.
