Default tci 3500 super street fighter stall + cam question

anyone have any thoughts or expirence with one? apparently its a 3500-3800 stall. I wanted to go with a 3000, but this one is 175$. Thinking about buying it. am i really sacrificing anything with a 3500 vs a 3000 or vise versa? i only wanted the 3000 due to an article i read with vettewebs C4 project.

its a tci super street fighter with lock up. The ad says its lightly used, i have no problem with that. Just wondering if anyone has ran one. Im slowly building this car, only has air intake, intake elbow, nitto 555r 315's, flowbastard cat back and a manual cutout for the track. Im trying to deciede if when i get a stall to put it in now or wait till i buy a cam and do it all over the winter. Would this stall work well with a XFI 466 cam?

Is anyone on here running a xfi 466 cam? any thoughts about it? is it a waste of time? I think if down the road i end up doing head work i will go to a larger cam anyways. Also wondering, Is there is a better suited cam for a 3500 stall with stock head LT1? I know ALOT of people run the cc503, i wanted run it also but the xfi 466 has my intrest aswell.

I would have done the very same thing! TCI used to be a very good company somehow the quality has dropped off but hey the price is good enough to allow you to play!
good luck with the set up and definately report back.

TCI's reputation has not been that great over the last few years...Id check out Yank or Circle D so you dont end up buying 2 stalls after the TCI breaks, or worse yet messes something else up in the car.

Ya get what ya pay for...

I've had a TCI 3500 in my car for a few years now and still no problems. Go for it.

96lt1..havent bought it yet, *thinking* about buying it. figured i would do research first tho but cant find much reviews on it.

I dont know to much about torque converters, but why would it break? To much heat or fluid pressure?

slowmaro, hows it like on the street? do you have anything else done to the trans?

Trans just has shift kit. I got a huge tranny cooler too. Stalls run hot. It's not so bad on the street if you drive normal. If you beat on your car every second you're in it you will hate it. You will get some pretty terrible gas mileage. If you plan a cam in the future it would be a good thing to get now.

im also running a tci super street fighter, with a large cooler. no issues with the stall, cuts 1.6 60ft in a cam only set up on stock suspension. not sure where the bad rep for tci came from, seems the people that actually have one are happy with it. good luck either way.

id be wary of a TCI to begin with, but considering that its "lightly used" one for $175 bucks id pass on it. With stalls you get what you pay for.

Well, i picked it up. It came out of a show truck that had about 400 miles on the engine and tranny combo, guy said it was just too much stall. He said 150 would work, i could only get 20$'s so i paid 160 for it. it looks to be in great shape apart from a small scratch it got when he removed it himself.

I'm glad the people who are actually running the stall arnt having any issues with it!

you know you can send the converter off to tci and they can cut it open for you and "refresh" it. might be worth it just to be sure it really isnt beat to hell.

If you're not familliar with changing converters make sure it's seated all the way in the tranny before you put in any bellhousing bolts. Many people make that mistake and end up having to put a new pump in the tranny. When the tranny is bolted all the way to the motor the converter should still be able to spin freely. Good luck.

^ ive heard that, read up on install ALOT, using the transmission removal how to in the automatic tranny section.

so far i dont think of it has been actual hard work. Ive just run into certain situations with my car making it a little on the difficult side. swivel sockets made bell housing bolts alot easier. Ive noticed that my car is a little different then the one in the write up. so far i only have 6 bellhousing bolts that i know of, perhaps they didnt put 2 back in last time. also my tranny cooler lines dont have the eclips, they are just a tranny fitting. torque converter bolts are 15mm and not 8mm allen. transmission dip stick is bolted to the bellhousing by a bellhousing bolt. the transmission doesnt have a 12o'clock bolt just 2 at 9 and 3, unless im missing it.

The one in the write up is a LS1 f-body. Lt1's are slightly different, but still close enough to get the job done the same way.

LT1 have only 6 bolts, regular trans fittings, you can access the converter bolts a lot easier, dip stick is slightly different.

You got them all. There are only 6 bellhousing bolts. This would be a good time to change your tranny mount too if you haven't already. I'm running the Energy Suspension mount since I broke stock ones all the time. It's worth the money if you can afford it right now. I know money is tight for everyone these days.

yeah trans is out now. all these write ups, people complaining about moving exhaust and what not to get to bell housing bolts and using swivels and wobble head extrensions.

heres the trick, buy a 9/16ths (in my case) swivel socket. using that on the end of a 24" extension and at times another 12" extension, i got to every bolt without removing the exhaust.

Befor doing this i was kind of scared since ive never done it, after taking it out ive realized this is about as hard as doing spark plugs on these cars lol.

write up said total time can be 5 hours to a day. i spent about 5 hours, doing it hour or hour and a half at a time between last night and when i finished awhile ago. i was also using hand tools! no air tools!

so hows the converter acting?

i was going to say you could probably find a local torque converter manufacturer, and have it flushed and tested..

havent drivin it yet. putting the transmission back in the car proves alot harder then taking it out. the tranny cooler lines, one didnt want to thread in, i shouldve marked em top and bottom but i didnt so im hoping they are correct.

spent a good hour and a half messing with the car and transmission, more then 1 jack would be nice, and a lift!

torque converter bolts are wrong too. the stock ones deffinetly dont fit. Guess i should just call TCI?

I had the same problem. I forget the size bolt but I had to get it from Home Depot. If you go this route get grade 8 bolts like i did. I'll try to find the size.
