Thumbs up 396ci LT1 Convertible Race Car Build

1994 Z28 convertible, TH400 w/ transbrake, 9" rear, 275 M/T ET Street Radials

This was my first car, I've had it for over 10 years. It had 117k on it when I bought it, and it's at 160k now. I've been drag racing (Jr. Drag Racing back then) since I was 8 years old. My dad and I have been working on making this a race car for about two and a half years.

So here's where we are now:
  • New convertible top

Rear end, rear suspension:
  • Quick Performance 9" rear, 35 spline Moser axles with 4.56 gears and a spool
  • UMI Chrome Moly Adj. Torque Arm
  • UMI Double Adj. Rod-ended Panhard Bar
  • UMI Double Adj. Rod-ended Lower Control Arms and relocation brackets
  • UMI convertible subframe connectors
  • Solid Wolfe drag race swaybar welded on
  • Custom built 3" steel driveshaft
  • Comp. Engineering 3-way adj shocks

Front end, front suspension:
  • UMI Tubular K-Member
  • UMI Tubular Lower A-Arm Set
  • UMI Tubular Adjustable Upper A-Arm Set
  • QA1-R Adjustable Front Shocks
  • QA1 275 lb. Front Springs
  • Poly motor mounts
  • Madman manual steering rack
  • Madman alternator relocation bracket
  • DMH Fabrication Chrome Moly steering column

Interior, safety:
  • Wolfe 6-point converted to a 12-point full roll cage
  • Kirkey Pro Drag seat
  • Impact 6-point harness
  • Grant Formula GT steering wheel w/ SFI quick release
  • Moroso sealed battery box in trunk w/ cutoff
  • Painless 8-rocker switch panel and Painless chassis wiring harness

Transmission:
  • Transmission Specialties TH400, RMVB, transbrake
  • Trans cooler
  • Pat's Performance Converters Billet 8" converter, mechanical diode, 5400 stall

The engine:
  • Davis Race Engines built 396ci LT1, roughly 12.6:1 compression, 93 octane
  • Forged crank
  • Forged H-beam rods
  • Forged Diamond pistons
  • Custom Advanced Induction top end
  • Advanced Induction 200cc GM LT1 heads
  • Advanced Induction Hydraulic Roller 25X/26X on a 106*, .6XX lift
  • Advanced Induction ported LT1 intake manifold
  • Racetronix 63 lb. flow-matched injectors
  • AS&M monoblade throttle body
  • LPP 1 3/4" to 1 7/8" stepped stainless steel longtubes
  • Dual electric cutouts immediately after collectors, Y-pipe into Hooker catback

A big THANK YOU shout out to Snyder Fabrication (http://snyder-fab.com/) for all of his hard work with the roll cage and just about every other custom piece on this car. Also, Davis Race Engines for their tireless work in the spec'ing, machining, and assembling of this first class 396ci LT1 engine.

Thumbs up New Pics!

Time for a few more pictures! Almost time to start her up and head to the strip! Dash is almost complete, waiting to finish up a little more wiring before securing it completely. The Painless wiring harness has completely replaced the OEM chassis harness.

Interior coming together

All new brakes and front end

The holding tank for parts...

Another round of parts are in - Madman travel limiters, save your *** bars, TH400 dipstick, B&M trans cooler, etc

M/T 275 ET Streets, S/R Radials, and Billet Specialties Street Lites - THESE WHEELS ARE STUNNING IN PERSON

Tach and shift light mounted, dash and OEM gauges are in

No. No need at all. I'm only running a 275 tire. Plenty of clearance. I've had 17x11s with 325's on there without an issue in the past.

Where in West Chester are you from? Maybe I could stop by once the car is running. Sounds like a fun ride!

Just south of South Campus.

The engine bay is actually in great shape paint-wise. I spent a few hours soaking with Simple Green and scrubbing away and it turned out damn good. Other than some rust cleaning/painting that needs to be done in the OEM battery area, I don't think I'll be doing much. I'll take some pics of how it looks when it's all cleaned up.

I'm surprised no one noticed the Model A with the LS1/GTO motor.
