Default H/C/I + Stall build (Edit: Idle Video Added)

Earlier this year, I installed a smaller cam (219/227). Literally a month later, I was wanting bigger. This build was geared towards a fairly budget-friendly setup that would keep me content longer than my last setup (1 month...). A buddy and I pulled the motor/trans and did the work on his 2-post lift.

Parts Added:

- 243 Heads: Very Mild Port/VJ (215cc) by a local SAM grad. STOCK valves. Milled to 60cc. TEA dual valvesprings, Comp 7.350 pushrods (this gave me roughly .050" preload). Stock MLS gaskets. Just shy of 11:1 compression.
- Custom EPS Cam
- FTI 3600 Stall/Trans Cooler: Very tight, efficient converter.
- FAST 92/92: Mild self-port: Removed the infamous runner casting blobs/flaws and smoothed the short-turn radius.
- Flycut stock pistons .080" on both intake/exhaust
- Katech rod bolts (for high rpm insurance)
- Ls7 lifters
- FTP 98mm lid
- Delphi 85mm MAF
- Prothane Poly Motor Mounts
- Spohn Tubular Subframe Connectors

In addition to:

Full exhaust (LT's, custom ORY w/ merge and 3.5 cutout in I-pipe), 3.73s, 36lb injectors, ported ls6 oil pump (also had previous dyno tune, so that helps drivability until this setup is tuned).

Noteworthy Build Crap/Info

- PTV clearance was measured to be .025" (intake) and .058" (exhaust) BEFORE flycutting. I initially used the clay method, but my ADD stepped in, and I bought a base magnet/dial indicator. The dial indicator produced measurements .020" LESS than what I had measured via the clay method.
- I needed to replace my radiator, so I swapped to a new LT1 radiator. Little modification needed, and it provides better cooling (bigger core).
- I made solid lifters from my old ls1 lifters.
- Adjustable pushrod was an absolute necessity, glad I had one.
- Broke a motor mount bolt off in the block and rounded off an original T50 torque converter bolt. Crap happens.
- Initially didn't have any spark, but found an unplugged starter wire. Fired right up (we had done pre-ignition cranking/priming).

First Impressions

- The cam lopes pretty damn hard. It likes to die if stopped too long in either Drive/Reverse, as the idle is set at 600rpms (previous tune). Surprisingly, the cam isn't bad at all on the street. The higher compression and tight converter polish some of the rough edges (Still UNTUNED).
- The FTI converter is great so far. Very tight, which is what I wanted for a street car. I haven't been able to really get on the throttle yet, so no WOT impressions, but Gret @ FTI seems to have done a great job on the converter. Lockup seems to be around 39mph (still untuned). Is this normal before the computer is adjusted? As I read 45ish-mph is more ideal lockup speed.
- 1 week before the build, I had installed the FAST 92/92, and it developed a high idle/vacumm leak. I swapped from the stainless FAST intake bolts back to the original hex intake bolts. Problem solved.

Acknowledgments/Tuning

Paint_it_Black and I worked on the cam specs, then I called Geoff @ EPS to have them tweaked to his liking. Overall, great customer service. We're all anxious to see how the cam does.

Big thanks to Paint_it_Black, Nitroused383, Clayton, Evan, Greg @ FTI and Geoff @ EPS for the advice/help along the way.

After I get a few more break-in miles and get the oil changed, hopefully it'll be tuned late this week. I'm not expecting killer numbers through a stalled A4, but this combo should be solid.

Hopefully this lengthy thread helps those considering a more aggressive setup for their daily driver. Anybody else that's daily driving/driven a similar setup, feel free to share any experience or advice.

Edit: Untuned Idle (really crappy camera vid)

Sounds great man, eager to see what kind of power it makes, better yet, what it runs at the track

I think you are going to have to update your stripes some how I don't think your going to be able to pull off STOCK anymore. Are those the Endurance lobes?

Do you think the 3600 stall will do. Or do you plan on going bigger.

The valve events of this cam should produce killer midrange power. Once we're able to get a good dyno graph of the power curve, it'll be easier to determine whether a restall would be more ideal.

New LS7 lifters (taller plunger seat), and unmolested, stock rockers (for now anyway).

Thanks for the PM on your long coming build thread. Looks like congrats are in order. You are almost there bro. Can't wait to see a graph. She's gonna rip.

Sounds nice. Is that the stock cam?

How does the valve train sound with the lifter preload you have?

Glad you finally got the f*cker back together, what a pain in the *** you went through. Hope it all works out and holds up. Should have degreed the cam in haha you silly guys. Your trans is going to hate you because that thing is going to make power past 7000 rpm easy.

I should clarify, it will pull clean to 7000 rpm without falling on it's face. This guy's setup makes peak power @ 7200 rpm with a Fast https://ls1tech.com/forums/12770494-post4.html We're only talking about a 346 here and I don't see why a Fast won't support 7000 rpm.
