Default Converters And STR

I have yet another converter question:

When it comes to STR is it better to have a higher or lower number? I know that the higher the STR the higher the amount of torque is, but is that necessarily the best for a street car? The reason I ask is I am stuck between two converters both of which are 3600 stalls but one has a STR of 1.86 while the other has a STR of 2.5.

How does it feel on the road? Does it take a lot of gas to get moving?

A high STR is going to require more RPM to get the car moving while driving the car normally. A low STR is going to move the car with less RPM.

ok, so the lower is better as far as getting the car to move, but the higher is better as far as the amount of torque on the ground. Do I have that right?

Yes, with a high STR it'll blow the tires off easier but it might get old street driving at a higher rpm at a low mph.

There might be more to it. My converter builder told me about pump (impellar) fin exit angle and stator blade count and fin angle.

The way I understand it the stator has the most effect on STR and converter feel as far as tight or loose, and pump fin exit angle will fine tune that feel. I may be wrong on this but I watched him restall my converter with a different stator and pump with a positive fin angle and it went from too loose to just right.

If you're into cutting open junk converters you can use this chart to get a better idea of whats what. http://www.sonnax.info/announcements/STALLCHART.pdf

The front half of a xxxx and the rear half of an xxxx yup... 3500 with a 2.1 STR, IIRC.

haha. gotcha. I still don't know which converter I want to go with. I'll probably just do the higher STR, just to be more fun.
