Default 1979 trans am to ls1/t56

hey guys,

i hav a 79 ta that i want to swap an ls1/t56 into. i'm going to be getting everything from a 99 camaro. engine, harness, ecu, trans, slave and master cylinders, clutch pedal, fuse box, etc.

now i'm going to get the carshop adapter plates, and probably the edelbrock swap headers, but my questions are the ones that i havent been able to find in searching.

for the t56, is there a swap crossmember for the 2nd gen trans am?

i'm going to be running the accessories and oil pan off of a the fbody, from what i've gathered that should be fine and give me plenty of clearance?

i remember when i initially thought about doing t his close to 10 years ago on another 2nd gen trans am, i found a complete swap kit. included motor mounts, trans mounts, and everything else that was needed for the swap (not wiring harness or anything, just hard parts like crossmembers) is there a place or places where that is available?

Try a SEARCH. IIRC there might be some tierod interference with the alternator and the pitman arm. IIRC (again, lol) JJfarmer's swap mentions something about using a Ponitac dropped centerlink (with matching pitman arm) to clear this problem. Again. try a search.

Good luck, take pics and start a thread.

I did search, I don't have to worry about the pitman arm/center link issue.

Just curious on the makes of bra@ckets available for the swap to mak it a bit faster

BRP offers a kit, that includes a new crossmember, but I think you have to still drill new holes in the frame to mount it..... Im doing the same exact swap right now, but im goin with an auto til i get a good t56..... would like to see some pics of yours.... as far as engine brackets, looks like youve got it down for the most part, and if you want to use the low mount a/c you are supposed to notch the frame... but other than that, it goes fairly simple.....

so i did more research, i think i'm going the keisler route for the hydraulic clutch setup. unless the 4th gen fbody setup will fit my 2nd gen without much engineering.

anyway, spent most of my day off cleaning up my firewall, removing the suitcase to make way for the eventual a/c delete box. just waiting on the funds to purchase the ls1 t56 setup, will start doing the swap in the upcoming weeks. should finish up the firewall by tomorrow night, may just pull the subframe to properly clean it all up and get it painted in por15.

so here's my plan:

edelbrock swap headers, possibly keisler hydraulic clutch kit and pedals, as well as floor pan for the auto to manual swap, leaving the ls1 and t56 stock for now, sending my stock ecu out to get reprogrammed, custom driveshaft, i'm thinking of doing the stock harness modified for my application. fbody accessories minus the a/c, pypes performance crossflow exhaust, mayb the edelbrock swap plates, and the gforce t56 crossmember.

any ideas on my selections?
