Default LS7 Lifter

Is it my imagination, or does it seems like there are a lot of reports of issues with LS7 lifters?

People do not post about how great they work but everyone will jump on the internet if something has an issue. There are MILLIONS of these lifters in the street everyday, the very small number that show up in here is such a small percentage it wouldn't even be worth mentioning.

A lot of the noise issues are people not checking the pushrods for the correct length, not pre-soaking them before install or very aggressive cam lobes with very fast ramps that slam the valves closed.

So, in the big picture, no, the so called LS7 lifters are not junk.

EXACTLY. no one comes on and says that they are working great. i havent had any issues with mine, besides a noisy valvetrain but that is a pretty common occurence with a very aggressive cam profile. just check your preload by ensuring correct pushrod length and you should be aight.

I'm right at 1000 miles with mine and I run the Torquer 3. So far so good. BTW after my new build my car has very little valvetrain noise compared to the same cam in with 7.4s, meassure for correct PR lenght.

I didn't say they were junk. I just said that it seems like there are quite a few reports of issues with them, more so than other lifters. I'm sure that issues with any lifter would be reported. If there's any kind of concerns with them, I simply want to know now before I put a set in my engine. That's all. Not trying to run any good product down.

I had my heads milled so I ended up with 7.350. I think the 7.4s were to short with the stock set up.

Well I'll be one to chime in on them working without issue. Mine has been together for about 3yrs & almost 60k miles. Not a single issue, I do have the usual valvetrain noise but its nothing to worry about. My car sees about 300+ miles a week of mixed driving & I like to play so it hasnt had a easy life. Everything is holding up just fine.

I'd agree alot of the problems are from improper install. And by this I mean people not soaking them, running wrong pushrod length for their combo, running far too aggressive of a cam with a stock replacement lifter & so on.

Success of a build relys on proper component matching. Of coarse there are gonna be stock lifter failures when you slap a huge cam in & run it to redline constantly. Why this seems to suprise so many people is still confusing to me.

Working fine here...

LS7 Lifter + Aggressive Ramp Rate + Heavy Valve Train = FAIL

Well, I'm running a 220/224 .581/.581 cam with XER lobes, and stock rocker arms. That doesn't seem very aggressive around here. Should be good to go I'd think.

243 heads, stock valves and Pac 1218 springs. They're milled .035, using GM MLS gaskets, and will be measuring for PR length. What's the prescribed preload for LS7 lifters?

You'll be fine, even if the valves are solid, they're still pretty light weight. I try to get in the range of 0.060"-0.080"

I replaced a the ls1 lifters with a set of ls7 lifters in a friends car because his were tapping. No noise issues with the "ls7" lifters.

To regurgitate what other's have already said, most people are too lazy and don't properly measure for correct pushrod height. LS7 lifters have a slightly taller seat height than LS1 lifters. That combined with other factors - milled heads, thinner head gasket, wild cam, etc. will lead to inevitable failure if you don't set up your pushrods correctly. There are no issues with the part itself, it's the user 99% of the time.
