Default 228r Cam 228/228 588/588 114 questions

I have searched for an answer to my question, but I keep getting opposing answers. I want to do a cam install on my LS1 engine. I have about 103000 miles on it and everything internal is stock. I am getting this cam for a 2000 TA DD and I am being told that all I need are some PAC 1218 valve springs or similar and some 7.4" hardened pushrods & I'd be good to go. I am not sure if I should get 3/8 or the 5/16 pushrods from Comp, b/c some say it takes some modding on the stock heads depending on which ones I use. I am also being told that I can use the stock rockers. I found some Comp Cam Magnum 7638 LS1 7.4 pushrods used. The questions that I have are: (1) 3/8 or 5/16?...I do not want to do any modding to the heads. (2) used pushrods with about 15K? (3)stock rockers or is an upgrade a necessary? (4)should I use 7.4 or 7.425, b/c some say the 7.425 decrease valve train noise. (5) Recommended oil pump: some say Melling some say ported stock LS6 b/c Melling's are junk. I know these questions have been answered, and when I make my mind up someone else completely knocks out everything I thought on a different post. I figured I would post the questions and stick with these answers. Thanks for any help.

I would contact TSP, they will have everything you need. I just put a 228r in from them a few months ago and i ordered everything from them. I got the PAC springs, 7.4 pushrods, 228r, all the gaskets, ls2 timing chain, ported ls6 oil pump.

you dont need to upgrade the rockers

I have those same pushrods for my setup and everything should be fine with them. Melling is a proven company! I really dont think anyone could reasonably call them junk. melling m295 would work fine for you.

The PAC 1218 springs would be the best choice although starting to get close to that 0.600 maximum. Should free up some power over a double spring setup. Since the 228R has a smaller base circle than the stock cam, the 7.425 should be a better choice and quiet down the valvetrain also.

Also use the stock rockers, get a LS2 timing chain, and a LS6 oil pump (stock or ported)

I got all my parts from TSP as well. They sold me the 7.4" and while they did works just fine they did not provide enough preload and the vavletrain was quite noisy. I suggest FIRST that you measure yourself once the cam and heads are on. But if you cannot be bothered go with the 7.425" or a 7.375" if using LS7 lifters.

Ya I dunno. The 7.400" gave me .050" and .060" preload and it was just too loud :-/

3/8 or 5/16? Is there any circumstance that would not allow me to just go ahead and get the 7.425 pushrods to just be sure there will be no valve train noise? Is there anything special that I would need to do in order to use the LS2 timing chain? Sorry about all the questions...I am just used to building old 350's and 400's.

That cam will require a 7.425-7.450 depending on the core. XE-R cams almost never take the stock pushrod on a stock head because the base circle is smaller.

The whole "7.4's will get you close" mentality needs to be flushed down the toilet and forgotten about.

5/16" is what most use including the ones TSP sells.

MEASURE for the correct length . I don't care how many and who say you will be fine going with this size or that..play it safe and have the peace of mind knowing you didn't guess.
