Exclamation Help! Starting Flight School in a WEEK!

I'm in the Marine Corps and training to be a Naval Aviator. I start primary in a week so I am trying to get things squared away now before I lose every minute of my spare time.

I just replaced the a/c compressor, orifice tube, and accumulator today as I've known my compressor to leak for a couple yrs now, I got sick of shootin in a can of refrigerant every other week.

So, now I have everything put back together; required PAG oil in the compressor and accum as directed. I hook up the can of R134 and start the car- the compressor clutch kicked on and it was taking refrigerant in. Not one can into it yet and the gauge on the R134 peaks into the red reading high PSI. What am I doing wrong?

You have to pull the system down under vacuum for a while to get all the air and moisture out, then charge the system with the required weight of refrigerant.

Update: Took it in to Pepboys for my obligatory raping, which I couldn't avoid due to time constraints of classing up soon. Had them evacuate, recharge, and leak check for a hefty fee. Positive side- New a/c is a go!
