Default Stock Rear end gear ratio?

I know the z28's either came with 2.73 or 3.23, but is there a way to look it up for my car using the vin or something? And does anyone know which z28's came with positive traction and which ones didn't? Was the 3.23 posi available in all LT1 years?

I'm trying to decide if I should take the rear end out of my 95 parts car, because it seems like it had the positive traction, where as my 93 driver will spin one tire all day long. (I only drove the parts car one time before I tore it down, but it sure cut some good donuts on dry grass, and definitely left marks from both tires)

From what I understand all LT1 cars came from the factory with LSD. Was your 93 an LT1 car? I think the more likely scenario is that the posi is blown.

You can check your RPO codes for the gear codes.

GU2 = 2.73s
GU4 = 3.23s

Depends on if it's an A4 or an M6.
All LT1 Z28's came with Posi.
A4 = 3.23
M6 = 3.42

Many A4s came with 2.73s (mine included) while every 6-speed car from 94+ got the 3.42s. The 6-speeds in the 93 model year get a little more tricky. If the car came from the factory with 2.73s you got the M28 transmission (taller first gear). If the car came with 3.23s, you got the M29.

So what's that mean? Not all A4s were 3.23s, and not all M6s were 3.42s.

Just to throw out there, the 2.73 equipped cars won't allow you to put the gear selector in first like the 3.23 geared cars which is an easy way to find out what gears you have. If you do have a 2.73 geared car you can lift off the upper console and take a tab out which will then allow you to put the gear selector in first.

I was wandering about that 1st gear. (BTW everyone its an A4). My 93 goes down to 1, but the 95 didn't, only went down to 2. I put the 95 trans into the 93 car and noticed that it accepted 1st gear, which I thought was strange, but it makes sense now because the transmission wasn't keeping it from selecting 1st gear, chevrolet was.

So this means that my 93 has 3.23 and the 95 has 2.73. I'll check out the links you guys posted and verify it though. But I guess there's no sense it switching out the rear end, cuz I'll be heading in the opposite direction.

It's ok. In post #2 he mistakenly said GU4 was 3.23 and it's really GU5.

Thanks guys, I got it all figured out now since I put my vin's into the link above. My 93 is 3.23 and 95 part car is 2.73. Obviously, my LSD in the 93 is not working, so I guess I'll take the ring gears out of that rear end, put them in the 95 rear end and that'll be a wrap until I can get 3.73's.

You can't just swap ring gears. The gearset has to be completely replaced. Not to mention the two gear ratios use different carriers (2 versus 3 series).

Don't forget your speedometer and shift points will also be off without compensating in the PCM. In this scenario, I would just wait until you can do the 3.73s.
