Default Steel vs Chromoly Cage

I'd like to hear some opinions on Steel Cages vs Chromoly. I know the obvious reason to go with chromoly is to save weight. Does anyone know the actual weight deifference between chromoly and mild steel? I could not find it doing a google search. Are there any other advantages to doing chromoly? I'm tempted to spend the extra cash on a good welder, buy a cage from jegs, and do the install myself. Opinions?

It's a difference of about 30 lbs for a 6 pt rollbar.

Chromoly is 30% lighter than mild steel

so let's say you have a 100 lb mild steel cage
you would have the same cage in chromoly it would be 70 lbs

other plusses

chromoly can only be tig welded(looks better)
you won't regret doing chromoly do it right first

Would I regret the steel cage for any other reason besides weight?

Wolfe's site says their 6pt steel weights 80-85 while chromoly weights 60-65.

I saw that. I'm actually looking to do a 10 point. I am seeing that the steel cage will be about 35lbs or so heavier.

for a roll cage your looking at about 50-60 pounds difference.. then obviously you have take take into account the price difference between them. I have a supra and the main hoop for it is mildsteel(weighs 23pounds) my fathers chromoly main hoop in his firebird was about 14 pounds.. now thats just the main hoop, so now think about all the bars that are also going in the car and you' ll get up to 50-60 pounds difference between them quick... also, a mild steel cage can be tig welded if you wanted the welds to look better. jason.g

i just weighed my roll bar(not installed yet, lol) 6 point mild steel 85 pounds.. i'll see what the differnece is between the mildsteel bars and chromoly bars tommorow.. i'm gonna put the mildsteel hoop in my car, but make all the other bars out of chromoly.. i don't ever plan on putting a roll cage in the car so this will be perfectly legal and lighter then going with the mildsteel through out.. jason.g

Smile

If I was to do a cage in a Hot Rod I would spend the extra money and go with a chromoly cage.

I am going through the same decision: These are the wolfe prices for 10pt (jig Notched)
Mild Steel - $710.00 - 135lbs (I can weld in myself)
4130 CM - $924 - 95lbs (They charge around $1000.00 to install if I completly gut out my car)
My thought process is if 40lbs is worth $1300.00, and also if I decide to weld anything to the cage (window net, seat support, etc) who will I bring it to since I dont have a tig welder, if it is mild steel I could do it myself.

Yea I'm seeing it about the same way. Jegs sells SWracecars cages for $229 for a 10 point. About $300 shipped. The points at the bottom are jig notched. The ones that weld to the hoop and such are not. Talk about saving alot of money. I can stay under 3400raceweight with the cage so I think I am going mild steel, and buying a nice mig welder to make this a project for myself.

Some of us just don't have deep enough pockets to spend as much on a cage as we did on our motors....

What color are you going to paint it Joe? j/k

I dont think you will regret it, your cars light enough and I'm sure at some point you'll switch over to a tubular K member and that should get some weight off to buy back. Any case just jet up make things all better.

The only reason to do a 6 point steel would be if you knew you were going to need a 10 of 14 point cage in a year or two and you just needed to get by until then. Otherwise you'll probably going to find yourself wanting to free up that 20-30lbs some day.

if its a legal kit [once back bars are welded ] it should still be made out of same material so there would be no wieght savings

in talking about bolt in chromoly vs. a weld in steel if you dont want to pay to get it welded. the chromoly bolt in should still be lighter that the weld in steel right.
