Default LSX Motor In 1966 El Camino

1966 El Camino
383 stroker motor
turbo 400 3500 converter
custom made drive shaft
posi 373 gears

I want to sell my motor and put a 5.3 or 6.0 LS motor in it

Im not sure if i should keep my transmission in that i have now or sell it and put either a 6 speed or a over drive auto trans in it like a 4l60e etc just depends mostly on cost but i would LOVE a 6 speed in my car

I want to have power but i also want to be able to get decent gas milage and be able to drive it on a road trip if i wanted

Im looking for mid 12's but for now just a swap and maybe a big cam would be nice =)

I figure i can come up with $4,000 maybe a little more will that be enough for motor parts wiring etc?

(If i got the motor/parts how much would a shop charge to do this swap for me if i brought my car with no motor and just said put this 5.3/6.0 in my car?)

From the looks of it there are tones of people out there doing these swaps seems easy and not really THAT much money but im still scared of all the wires running into problems etc ive never done a swap like this

There is a guy in the DFW area that charges $3500 to install, plus parts/motor and such. This is why I did mine myself, ouch!

did you do your SBC? if you did, there isnt much more to the swap, you can mod the harness or you can buy one.

if you aren't scared of a sbc then you shouldn't be scared of a genIII especially if you get a premade harness for 600 bucks, then the mounting plates and oil pan you can buy bolt up, and if your harness is as good as mine itll come with a manual on how to put it in and troubleshoot it. accessories from a truck work perfectly if you use brp style mounts and keep the tranny in its stock position. I did mine in 3 weeks in my chevelle between my engineering courses so if you have a month of weekends to work with it would be a snap

Yeah i did my small block gen 1 myself the problem is that i just moved to a new area dont have any connections and cant really work on my car like i did at the old house

Does anyone have a parts list of what i should be buying?

Is a 6.0 or 5.3 motor better and with a cam and tune what kind of hp should i expect at the wheels?

Motor = $700-900
Harness = you said $600

I would go with the 6.0. Also, try to get one with the good heads.

Here is a link to my build. Hope it helps!

im guess staying with my turbo 400 would be cheaper by just getting a adapter plate and bolts right?

will i still be getting decent gas milage though and if not how much would it be to swap the transmission for another one and what one is better to go with?

im thinking maybe its best to just stick with doing the motor swap and worry about the transmission later down the road since i already might be tight with money with just the motor swap alone

parts list to get the motor at least in my car and hooked up...

first get a motor = $900
then buy my harness = $600
motor mounts = $80
headers im guessing = $600
Ls1 manifold fuel rail and injectors = $250?

do any of you know where i can get a oil pan pick up and a transmission adapter plate/kit from?

what cam would be best to wake up the motor ?

what else do i need?

crate engine depot has some good deals on the flexplate and spacer kit, just google around search for the part numbers in the forum here for the oil pan kit you want and for the transmission adapter kit and google it

look on the stickeys at the top of the forum....there is one for a body swaps...

u can use a h3 oil pan...thats what im running and if you buy an aftermarket flywheel...which i would recomend doing (ive seen 3 factory ones blow apart..not pretty) then you dont need any type of an adapter to fit up to your th400...im using a tci flywheel and a th350 tranny

im not sure about mpg's.....havent really figured it yet...wouldnt be accurate anyways cause i floor it everywhere.....

by the way...any cam you put in a 5.3 or 6.0 will net you more power.....

Cam choice is gonna kinda depend on what you want to do with the car/truck. It sounds like you plan on doing a lot of street driving I would recommend a ls6 cam. Also brp makes a swap kit that retains the ac comp in the factory spot and remember that if you use a LS1 intake you are gonna need to ditch the truck acc and go with a car setup. Not sure bout the elky but in the chevelles you gotta split the tunnel is you go with a t56. Hope this helps. By the way that looks like a nice ride.
