anyone?
could the converter be locking or too tight?
i had the converter freshened up by yank late last year before putting it in. But the problems like sometimes dying when i put in reverse were present back then, but only would die sometimes. now its all the time.

now every time i put in reverse it dies instantly. also the shifts are weird now. th e1-2 shift feels like its winding up then when it shifts it comes down, then the rpms go up again.

There are different settings for some idle related stuff,
for reverse than P/N and D (if I recall, been more than
a few months since I looked at any idle tuning). Maybe
these got neglected.

Mine was doing that a few a years ago. There is a switch on tranny that needs to be changed. I forgot exactly what it is called but it takes only a few minutes to change. I think its a reverse solenoid.

Why don't you scan it for codes? It could be the IAC, TPS, and other things that won't set the check engine light.
Just changing parts isn't the answer. About that alternator, what kind of diagnosis lead to the belief that it's bad?

because it only does it when its hot and the voltage reads below 12 near the red. when teh car is warm or cold. not on for that long. the voltage is up way above mid point. when its like this it is fine to put in R.

The switch is the PSM, Pressure Switch Manifold. It's bolted to the valve body.
I don't know about efilive, I have hp tuners, with that I can scan it and see the switch operating. The switch tells the ECM what gear the transmission is in.
I seriously doubt thats the problem.

There are two switches:
- the pressure switch manifold on the valve body as Jay said;
- the P/N switch on the selector linkage;
(the P/N switch is regardless of the reverse lamp switch);
the PCM reads both of those, and it uses the P/N switch to select the idle air tables... when selector lever is put in gear (D or R) the load on the engine increases which requires the in-gear idle air tables to become active;
in post #15 you indicated that the P/N switch is not indicating on the scantool... so this appears to be the problem.
