Alternator question

Exclamation Alternator question

my alternator started to squeal. so i replaced with a new 160 amp unit.


the pigtail that goes to the alternator broke off the old one so ididnt connect it to the new one. what happens if that pig tail isnt connected?

That's the exciter wire, it basically tells the alternator to start charging. You can get a new one off ebay for a decent price:

I think the stealership charges $40 for it.

If your new alternator is working without it then it's a one wire or 'self exciting' alternator. Stock f-bod alternators need the wire.

lol. good thing.


cause i connected and started the car up with the new alternator and it drained the battery in a min. i thought the alternator wasnt working. haha.


i just ordered one off ebay. hopefully i get in soon.
