means you have a leak some where, could be your gas cap being loose, your evap vent solinoid be F'd up, a crack in one of the plastic hoses. Smoke testing the evap system is one of teh ways to find your leak, but you need a Tech 2 to seal the and purge the evap system.

vent solenoid is back by the tank, has a 2 wire connector you can close off the solenoid with any good scan tool that has bidirectional controls. You will need a smoke tester though. Your tuner could kill the light for that code if you want.

The vent is back by the tank should have a two wire connector on in.

The evap purge is on the intake drive side.

A purge solenoid problem can set a leak code also.

you should have a test port with a green cap on it specifically for testing the EVAP system. Introduce smoke into the system, wait a minute or so and look for leak with a flashlight in engine bay and under car. You should also hook it up at the filler, there are adapters that allow you to smoke the gas cap and tank, pump seals etc.

well you do it with the car off. As far as i know smoke machines generally pump the smoke in at 1 PSI or less, as soon as the car starts the smoke is pretty much gone, it doesn't mix with the gas or anything like that. Can't really think of any ways it could hurt performance. I guess you could say its like mixing food dye into water, changes the way it looks but nothin else.
