engine bay painting...
Well, although I'm pretty much a total noob at painting cars I decided to take the plunge and do some painting in the engine bay while I have the engine apart for some maintenance. The OEM paint job was pretty bad in the first place (primer showing through the very light coat of paint, and a big bubbled area on the driver side strut tower) and it has scratches/dings from 11 years and lots of time under the hood.
I got Sherwin Williams Automotive to OEM color match a pint of "Arctic White" and reduce it into three spray cans, single stage. I'm doing this in my garage, and am using plastic sheeting over the fenders/hood/engine/etc and taping everything off... I basically built a little tent over the hood with the sheeting that will hopefully keep most of the crap out of the paint.
I've got everything cleaned up with rags/Simple Green where I'll be painting, and have scuffed the spots with a red Scotch Brite pad. The spot on the driver side strut tower where the paint was bubbled up was sanded out flat.
I've laid down the first tester light coat and so far so good...
Here are some teaser pics, I'll have more pics as things progress...
Cheers,
Rob (Bad30th)

More pics from this morning, first tester coat is on... I'll probably wait until Sunday to do more, busy weekend... In the pic with the hood release cable you can still see the primer from my awesome factory paint job.
Enjoy !

I'm using a single stage paint (color and clear all mixed in one). You're doing a lot more work than I am ! I'm mostly just hitting the strut towers and the front clip, the stuff that's really visible with everything reinstalled. I thought about doing what you're doing but that's a LOT of work ! If this attempt turns out well I may go for the whole disassembly/repaint one of these days.
Cheers !

All done, it turned out pretty good - now to start putting the engine back together...
I got a little overspray on the hood struts, will get that cleaned up today too.
