Default I need a new steel M6 flywheel...

Going to be fixing the tranny and installing a new clutch soon but my current flywheel is likely near the end of its life. It has been turned by me at least 3 times and maybe a 4th by the dealer way back when.

That said I want a new one. Aare all steel flywheels pretty much the same? Do all LT1 flywheels come properly balanced just like my original? Suggestions on the best buy?

Don't you have to ask for balanced or unbalanced when ordering a flywheel? My new engine was balanced with the stock flywheel since it has a counter weight on it.

I guess thats what I am trying to find out. My motor is externally balanced with the stock flywheel. As far as I know, the weighting of the original flywheel has not been altered.

I turned in my old one at Autozone for a reman. I know, I know. But hey, it gets the job done.

I know the SLP flywheel is neutral balanced. Mine currently collects dust, since I can't use it.

Just called Autozone. They want $57 for it. I guess the only thing that can be really frigged up on a cheap Chinese junk part might be the balance.

The Autozone flywheel is fine. They're actually made by a company in Oceanside, CA. I run it in my LT1 and I only paid $57 after the core charge ($100).

They are re-surfaced stock ones iirc.

few options

http://www.autozone.com/autozone/par...er=993635_0_0_

....but I just got one from kragen for $30...$130-$100 core.

I think NAPA is a ZOOM FW....all are centered iron cast.

if you want something "better" get a steel one. SPEC may be the cheapest. I have seen McLeod 153 LT1 FW on ebay for under $200 sometimes. Those have the screw on weight of stock "external" balance or remove it for "internal" or "neutral" balance motors.

Agreed. You asked this a while back. Did you find the original spec (thickness) of a mint flywheel?

Stock M6 flywheel will be fine. As long as the motor is blueprinted to be balanced like stock, you're good to go. Just be sure to line up the undersized hole in the flywheel (the one not for a bolt) to the hole in the back of the crank for alignment. Otherwise the counterweight would give you a hell of a shaky ride!
Even a stock reman or resurfaced would be fine, as long as it has only been resurfaced once....
Hence came the idea of measuring. Get the spec on thickness of stock new flywheel and a cheap-*** digital caliper and go to work!

Negative, Unless they have changes them in the last few years. I ordered a SLP Steel Flywheel, They assured me it was neutral balanced. Put it in the car and it viberated like hell. took it to the guy that done the balane on my engine and sure enough it was balanced like the stockers. Be sure to look at yours before you install it. If it has more "meat" next to one bolt hole than the rest of them than it is not neutral balanced
