Default 200 MPH standing mile - how many hp?

First, I wasn't sure exactly where this should be posted, so after looking over the options, I just threw it in here. Mods, if it should be somewhere else please don't be mad.

I'm very interested in the standing mile concept and I think when I build my dream engine, I will have my sights set on a 200 MPH goal for that event. I am curious how much HP this is going to require for a WS6. I know aerodynamics play a big factor in this, but just for the sake of argument I'd like to hear some estimates on what you guys think it would take.

I currently run a 98' Camaro at the Maxton Mile. It takes on average about 750 rwhp to hit 200. That is assuming the car is lowered and has the right gearing.

It is not an easy task, and it is best to have WAY more than 750.....You are pushing a lot of air at that speed.

It also creates a ton of heat having the throttle open for that long. You can burn up a motor on a single pass.....I have seen it multiple times.

I would shoot for 900rwhp if I were you. Manual Trans is almost required.

Lingenfelter did it in the mid 90's with one of there twin turbo TA's. Think it had around mid 700rwhp as well.

Its more than just hp though, gearing, shifts, aerodynamics etc etc.

So what is considered the right gearing for that kind of event then? I plan on lowering and minimizing drag to the max extent possible also, but thanks for the rough HP estimate to shoot for. That's gonna be way more expensive than what I wanted to build (was hoping to keep it NA) so looks like I need to start evaluating either nitrous or FI to reach that goal. Thanks for the response everyone.

I am going to guess that nitrous would not be a good idea for that distance and the length of time you would have to have the spray on it. I predict bad and expensive things would happen, but I am just guessing. It's good to have goals, just have to be realistic about them and what you can actually afford.

I appreciate that feedback, and I will be realistic, in the very preliminary phases of gathering information now. If it turns out that I can't do it, I won't...at least not in my WS6. I was mainly thinking nitrous for the 150+ speed range, if it can even be setup that way, to just add the extra power when it's needed to overcome drag.

If that's not possible, then I'll look at other options. I really need to find someone with a turbo setup and a supercharger setup so I can find out definitively whether or not that's what I want to do.

If your in a camaro or WS6 your going to need close to 1000 rwhp to do 200mph in the standing mile.

Depends highly on aero.

A naturally aspirated mild 427 Rx7 did 196. I think the motor made less than 500 whp.

He was higher than that and coming back next week with a turbo on it know I think.

The RX7, Supra, Ford GT do very well out there with less power. But for the rest of us bricks we need more power.

The LMR cars that went just over 200 in march were in the 900-1100 range. Lots of 620rwhp camaro only run in mid 180's.

Been there and run mine several times.

Here's a Hennessey zr-1 doing the standing mile. It's pretty neat.

Thanks for all the great responses. Looks like that goal may be too tall of an order for me to manage in my WS6 and try to keep it NA.....but now I've got the perfect reason to get a Supra. I have always loved the look of supras. Time to start looking at a MKIV LS1 swap

Thanks guys!

Kinda new to the standing mile stuff. But I would say for the fbody cars a healthy diet would be in order also prolly along with some narrower tires.

almost mind blowing to see that you need 700whp to reach 200mph... Seeing that these cars can do 162mph stock. You would think that picking up 38mph wouldnt be too hard. Or is it just the case of doing it in a mile...

Like they said with the Veyron, it would only need 600hp to reach 200mph.. But that's probably not in a standing mile.

There's a 246mph champ that ran the texas mile and he's at 1295hp. Gearing also has a lot to do with it. Can't bog and can't spin.
