Default Coil Relocation on a 55 Chevy

We're in the process of building a custom 55 Chevy with LS power at my shop HotRod Dynamics in Lenoir, NC. I've been documenting the build on the Tri-Five forum here http://www.trifive.com/forums/showthread.php?t=49660
Anyway one of the members (T-Bolt) suggested that I post pics of the Billet coil relocation brackets we have designed and are using on this project. If there is a big enough demand for these, we may produce some more.
Here is a pic of the brackets. Each bracket holds two coils so there is 4 brackets per engine. They can be placed side by side for very compact mounting of the coils. The brackets can be attached to the firewall, inner fenders, frame, engine, or anywhere else. They are counterbored for 1/4 socket head cap screws to hold them in place.

I fabbed a plate to mount the coil brackets to that located them on the lower front sides of the block. This will allow me to run short wires up to the plugs from behind the headers.

Lenoir - not far from the BRP and NC Smokies - I've tore up too many tires up there in the Vette! Love that part of the state.

Oh and those coil kits look awesome!

Joe,

Thanks for posting this. Very simple and clean. Plus - That's a great looking build.

Nice setup.

Do you think the Heat will be a factor any ?

What are you doing for the wires.. is the harness extented with a custom harness or some extentions...?

Nice work! I originally had my coils located low like yours and the consensus opinion here was that rain would be a problem. I relocated them to the firewall...

Hey thanks for the feedback guys. I think that heat would be less down there than the factory location since from the factory they are on the valve covers above the headers and heat rises. I also feel that they would get more cooling air, not to mention the aluminum mounts will act as a heat sink. As far as rain goes, I really don't see that being a problem either since they have sealed weatherpack connectors and the crank and cam sensors are also down low and will see as much water as these will. Since they are not behind a tire, I really doubt they would get wet in the rain anyway unless you drove through a river. For wiring, I used the stock coil harnesses and just extended the leads. For plug wires, I bought a length of black MSD wire and boots to make custom fit wires.

Here is another shot from under the car.

Be careful trying to sell them GM makes about a dozen different coils and they all bolt up differently. And as a Sponsor we offer universal billet coil relocate brackets for all coils and many specific vehicles.
