Smile 100k mile Ls1 Heads Cam Questions.

so my car (99 Camaro z28 m6) i just recently rebuilt the trans and am looking into engine upgrades next, the car has FULL bolt ons (other than UD Pulley), the car just hit 100k and its still pretty strong. i went to the track and went 13.2 @110 and has a **** 60' time of 2.3 so theres potential in it.

im thinking about upgrading the heads and cam on a budget and would like some insight. my plan would be something like 243 heads (or other if you can recommend something better) with an ms3 cam, but my question is, is that would those mods put more strain on the engine? is it safe to cam a 100k ls1? and what other supporting mods would i need. my goal would be to be right around 420-450rwhp.

look at a TSP head/cam combo.also consider new lifters and timing chain.I would be a little concerned about the rod bolts.

look at the ls6 stage 1 or the 5.3 stage 2.5 head/cam pkg.they sell a head gasket/bolts install kit also.what tranny do you have, what rear gears?you can email TSP or phone them for the best cam to fit you combo.consider a mail order tune by frost if you don't have a local tuner.

While saving up for your heads/cam package, save up a little more for a new shortblock also. I had 147K and engine ran like a top, right after my cam swap I spun a freakin rod bearing and that was that.

lifters, timing chain, oil pump, might as well throw on that UD pulley while its off also.

I would start with a solid foundation, new bigger shortblock, and then build off of that.

Take a look at some of ours, you may like the pricing.

I wouldn't waste your money on a ported stock head for over 1k for 1600 you can buy trick flow as cast 220s they are literally the best head for the money. If you wanted to go really cheap you can buy used 243 or 799 heads clean them up and mill them with a valve job.

you might want to consider some smaller camshafts so you dont have to spin the engine out so high.

Don't be a "pinhead", at 100K miles have the engine refreshed at least. Maybe hone/bore it a little and use new forged pistons. More cubes, H/C it and make 500 RWHP. Mayeb a 100 shot.

.

I wouldn't do heads and cam at 100k miles. Just play with it until you blow your current motor then build a new one with some goodies.

100k miles is nothing. Actually mileage is meaningless, all depending on the condition of it. If its good its good whether it has 100k or 10k on it. I'd do it... I do it all the time. Last 100k+ mile junk yard 5.3 made 640whp ran 7500rpms and lasted 3 years.
Mileage is just the distance the vehicle traveled... nothing to do with the abuse or wear and tear on an engine unles syou start getting way up there. 100k is nothing. Everyone is stuck on the 70's mentality they were brainwashed with while growing up that 100k is the end of the road. Technology is a little different now.

I was thinking the same... But at the same time piece of mind always helps.

If the car runs good, has good oil pressure, and has no known issues, I don't see why not.
