Ok, so I'm in college and still live at home. My parents kinda freak out when I "spend money" on my Camaro i.e. mods.

My boyfriend bought me 3.73's for my Birthday and the car is headed to the shop hopefully on Monday. SO, I need a good sounding excuse for why my car has magically disappeared.

I have a Silverado as my DD and if both cars are gone, they will know something is up. Only issue is my Dad kinda knows cars, so I can't just make up something from left field, and I can't just make something up about maintenance.

I need help in order to save myself the headache from the "saving your money" lecture.

Thanks! :P

Could always just say your boyfriend paid for it....

Well, he did pay for the gears, but I'm paying for the labor.

Plus, I don't want to throw him under the bus!

I would just be honest and say that you got the gears for a gift, and want to get them installed. Its not like your spending thousands of dollars or hurting the reliability of the car, so whats the big deal? When I was in college my parents gave me the same lecture as im sure many others on here got. But Id much rather be an adult about it and be honest opposed to lying about it to them. Just my 2 cents.
But as far as an excuse good luck with that, my dads a car guy too, and IF I ever thought about or mentioned the idea of taking my car to a shop he would want to look over it (regardless of the problem) to see if he could save me some money and fix it

When you lie to someone who has a clue about the situation (you said he knows cars), you must keep things simple, easy to remember, and use as much truth as possibile. In this case, considering the many ways that you could possibily be caught, keep the story related to the area that's actually being worked on.

Tell him that you noticed a bit fluid staining in the area of the diff, and took it in to have it checked out. Turns out the pinion seal was leaking (common issue on these cars, totally beleiveable), so you had it replaced. If you think he'll go so far as to inspect it closely, then get under there with a pressure washer at a car wash before you bring it home. Tell him you cleaned it up to make sure it wasn't leaking after the repair. Simple and closely related to the actual work being done making it damn near impossibile to be caught. :)

I like it, thanks!

Yeah, he won't go so far as to inspect it.

And I'm considering just saying "I'm having some work done to it," and leaving it at that since there isn't really going to be anything visibly different with my car, but we'll see. Just trying to brainstorm a few ideas lol

Well, knowing that they freak out about unnecessary money spent on the car, an open-ended statement like that may lead to suspicion that'll make any story you might tell later hard to beleive. Then the truth comes out, plus the fact you lied, and everything you wanted to avoid in the first place is now even worse.

You gotta do what you feel is right. Generally I'm not the sort that would suggest lying, but in this case I get your reasoning. Considering the situation doesn't effect them at all, I can see why it's just easier to avoid the conflict.

Just tell him the truth and be upfront. Say you got them as a gift. Labor shouldnt be that bad anyway. Guaranteed this convo would be much more smooth than if he found out you were lying.

I think the real question is: where do I find a girl who is into cars as much as you? :D Seriously, all I get from girls are "why is your car so loud, do you need to fix it"? And I only have a catback on it. In all seriousness, I would tell him the truth then tell him you'll let him drive it after, then he should be ok with it

Plus, just noticed you live at home. Think of the money you are saving by not going away to college! Throw that one at them too, I used to do it all the time when I was in college when the rents didn't approve of my spending.

Honestly, I would not even consider doing an gear swap on one of these cars with an A4 until after doing a TC. The 4L60E has a very aggressive 1st gear, and can launch well even with little 2.73s. What you need is more stall. 3500 or so for a stock car is about perfect. The gains will be MUCH greater than going to a 3.73 gear, and without any of the highway MPG loss (once the TC is locked, cruising rpms will be exactly the same as stock).

LOL! Good girls like this are out there. I married one of them. Every time I make one of my cars louder, she tells me it could still be a bit louder and be OK. One day I'm going to just run open headers on everything and see if that makes her happy.

hell, if u have to lie, if hes driven the car before, if he drives it after the gears, he may notice a slight difference in its drivability seeing he knows cars and such

We are pulling the stall out of my car when I do the 4L80E swap, so that's what we are waiting on in that department ;)

For what It's worth, I asked if it would be easier to tell the truth, or make up a convincing story.

Sounds like you guys have a good plan then. :)

If you two are planning to do additional work to the car, then these "stories" might get suspicious. Guess it depends on how often the car will be gone, and for how long each time.

I'll play devils advocate. Your parents do have a point about not wasting money on mods considering you are still living at home and are in college. Are you paying them rent, do you pay for your college, do you have a job? If you answer "no" to any of these questions then they might have a right to voice their opinion on where your money is spent. Their reasoning will be that any money spent on mods could have instead been saved, so you can move out of their house.

Yup. I'm a big fan of just being honest in life, because I've also learned it makes life much easier (even though at times it doesn't seem like it will.)

Well, you can go play devil's advocate somewhere else.

I work at a financial institution and my major is in financial management. I am very good about saving and budgeting my money and I know my limits.
