Default Possible spun bearing, my official rebuild thread

Well, yesterday was a beautiful day and my car was running as quick as ever. Previous best was a 13.52 trapping around 103 at 1600 DA. Yesterday I put down a 13.01 at 107.87 at -1100 DA(trapped as high as 109.14) and was hunting for twelves on a street tire (2.73 gears). After hot-lapping a few passes my car stalled when I was picking up my time slip. It didn't want to turn back on but I finally got it going and limped it back to the pits where it was knocking and shaking pretty bad with low low oil pressure. Got it turned off right away and knew I was going to be in for a new project.

I got the car towed home and got a ride with some buddies. I won't really know what happened until I dig into the bottom end or have it looked at by a machine shop. Oil was full and clean, wasn't doing anything crazy with the car (should be able to handle WOT) and it only has 88K miles on the motor which had some work done under warranty by the original owner but I can't remember exactly what it was.

So anyway, I'm making this thread as a way to document my trials and tribulations as well as to educate and document my engine rebuild. Depending on how bad things are in the bottom end will determine what direction I will be going with my rebuild.

I have never attempted anything of this magnitude and it will be a huge learning experience for me. I've got some good buddies willing to help me with removal/dis-assembly/install whom I probably wouldn't be attempting this project without.

As of right now nothing is touched and the car is sitting in the garage. I decided if I love that car and going fast, I would without a doubt tackle this project and rebuild my motor to superior specs of what it was when it took a dump on me. I will provide updates as work progresses and any advice/suggestions are welcome.

If you are looking to upgrade stuff like heads, intakes, injectors etc.... go ahead and start shopping the classifieds...

Don't worry about it and realize this is an opportunity to put together a badass setup

And hey.....your wallet will eventually heal

It's hard not to think of at least going with a cam but like I said I need to figure out what needs work in the bottom end before I know how deep the rabbit hole is gonna go. I know if I spend money making more power I'm gonna have to think about the trans and rear-end. I'll be done with school in December so that should free up some money but don't want to go broke getting this thing back together.

Bearing material doesn't stick to the magnet.......... you broke something else...maybe a lifter etc.

What he said. ^^^

I'd pull the heads, lifters, and cam before yanking the engine. You might have gotten very luck this time around.

I'll do this before I drop the motor (if it is deemed necessary). I'm just trying to get to the bottom of what happened and why. The guys who heard it run for a couple seconds at the track thought it was a spun rod bearing which is why I titled my thread accordingly. I will have to see what I can find out.

Id drop the motor, more thorough diagnosis and repair IMO.

My thoughts exactly, it won't take much more to drop the motor than it would to wrestle with taking it apart while it is still in the car. I'm just hoping to figure out this whole puzzle and not have it cost a fortune to get back running! Thanks for the support guys

The latest, got my oil filter cut open:

I used my drain plug to see if it was magnetic and it was pulling the metal out of the filter and was tough to get off the magnet, this is by no means all the material in the filter, just a small sample:

What brand is that oil filter?

This is looking like a spun bearing grinding up the bearing saddle, that's more metal than I usually see from a lifter failure.

I'm not liking the cheap-o cardboard endplates on the filter cartridge, thought only Fram had those.

Not that I assume the filter caused your engine failure.

The motor comes out easily through the top. If you need a hoist or a stand to borrow, hit me up.

Well, its been a while since I put in some good time on the tear-down. Today I got the AC off, PCM out, catch can removed, battery disconnected, already had the lid, MAF, and radiator shroud off. Have most the wires running to the engine disconnected as well. This is a small update but I am trying to keep up my motivation for the project.

While its apart looking at doing some things:
Powdercoating the valve covers, TB, MAF ends
Painting the lid and intake manifold

If anyone is looking for an LS6 intake with the EGR provisions let me know, I am trying to trade or sell mine to get one without the EGR port as I have deleted my emissions. May post a pic of the current state if I take one.

Things left to do:
Driveshaft
Torque Arm
Steering shaft
Brakes
