LS6 cam gains for stock 02 LS1
I've got a bone stock LS1 going into a 95 mustang with either kooks or dynatechs long tubes, no other mods. Trans is A4, I will be upgrading the converter, probably to a circle d or yank 3200. Is it worth $350 to upgrade the stock LS1 cam to a brand new LS6 cam & springs (207/218 .550/.551 117 LSA)? This will be a street car, driven to work, pick the kid up at daycare, blah blah blah. It must have good street manners & make some good power long before the tach reads 5K. I'm questioning how much grunt this motor will have down low with this cam. Please set me straight.

The LS6 will typically pick up around 15 hp over the stock cam and should act very similar to it as they are very similarly specced. I personally have a tough time with that cam because its a lot of work for a small gain. There are aftermarket cams that may cost a little more but will pick you up significant power over the stock cam.

Speaking from experience, the cam is worth it if you get cam/springs/pushrods very cheap, and tuning is cheap for you too. I personally picked up 25-30 rwhp and .25 ET and about 3 MPH with it.

I think it depends on your plans down the road. Are you going to be happy with a small bump or do you want more. I am replacing my motor and drivability is most important so I am happy with a small cam.

My friend's car is running 11s with a 220/220 cam even, but it has some weight reduction. He gets 23mpg highway with 3.73 gears!

That's good and not bad if the stuff was free or cheap ...but a 224 cam (still just as driveable and efficient mileage wise) and those same heads should run 11s @ 115+

I am with thunderstruck on this one. A low 220's duration cam will provide a much better powerband and power pickup for not much more money and the same amount of work. Driveability and gas mileage will still be right around where they were at before. In my opinion the LS6 cam specs are just silly for a performance oriented cam.

Is this a used cam? If so, I think that isn't that great of a deal. It really comes down to what you want out of your car. If a small power pick up with a smooth idle and stock driveability is what you want then go for the LS6 cam. If you want more then 350-360rwhp you would most likely need a different cam set up.
