Default Installing an ls2 timing chain damper on an LQ9

My LQ9 did not come with a timing chain damper. I was considering installing the LS2 timing chain damper:

My block is not drilled for a damper, but it has a machined flat area that looks as if it could be drilled. Has anyone done this? Advice to make it go smoothly?

If you're going to do the work, I highly suggest the LS3 tensioner. Same bolt pattern, but works better.

I have no advice on how to do it, but am doing this myself to a 4.8 soon. My l33 had the proper bolt holes.

I would consider the LS3 damper but I read a couple post where they complained that the LS3 damper had broken.

If you insist on having a dampner, the motor needs to get pulled and broken down. Then drilled/tapped by a machine shop.

I would not. I repeat, WOULD NOT drill into your block with it fully assembled. Especially without the tools to precisely place the holes.

I guess you won't be installing any then.

Looks like I have to man up and admit that it turns out you are right on this one after all.

Here is why:

It turns out that the bolts that hold the dampener in place are quite long. And, as you can see in the picture, the area of the block to be drilled is fairly thin comparatively speaking. So, in order to drill and tap this area to accept the dampener's retaining bolts, this section of the block would have to be drilled all the way through.

Unlike just drilling a bottoming hole, with a through hole there would be no way to keep all of the cast iron shavings from drilling and tapping out of the inside of the shortblock. Since I do not intend to disassemble the shortblock, I will pass on this mod.

Its not "needed" per say, its just that it makes you feel better about using the sloppy ls2 chain.

I never bothered... Had the shortblock built by the time I had researched more and realized you drill through block all the way I beleive. Didn't want to deal with shavings...
