Default starting car with no transmission

Hey everyone i am trying to fix a leak coming from the back of my engine again! I have everything removed, but my question is, can i start my car with just the flywheel attached to it? I would like to do this to inspect whether or not it is still leaking before mounting the tranny back up.

The starter bolts to the engine...just need a flywheel or flexplate to start the engine.

OP, all your balance weight is in the flywheel or flexplate, you won't hurt the engine starting it without a transmission, so long as it being rocked back a little without a transmission on a crossmember doesn't cause any issues...so just make sure you don't have any tight wires or fluid lines that might wind up stressed more by a running engine, and then you should be ok...please be careful if you are poking around under the car while it's running.

no don't do it! you'll destroy all the bearings and crack the block! are you nuts? lol, j/k couldn't help myself. an engine is an engine is an engine. as long as its all there, it'll run. nothing has to be connected to it. as long as its solidly mounted to something, or it will try to flip over.
