Default ls1 t56 think i broke it

ok so yesterday morning i was on my way to work and noticed that when i released the clutch there was a clunk noise almost what you would here when a rear is too loose, so i didnt pay much mind (figured i would check later that day at work). so i took lunch and when i left the store and shifted to second i heard a noise that sounded like a rock crusher alot like my rear did when i stripped the pinion gear teeth off. put it in third and it seemed ok. left from work and realized that it does it in all gears anything over part throttle. other than that it has no other noises, vibrations, and no symptoms leading up to the event. the car is a 91 mazda rx7 ls1 t56 commonly race on drag radials.

pull the plug and see if you have metal bits in the fluid..that will be a clear sign of trouble.

it could be the clutch hub has broken free of the outer clutch disc. The hub will get hung up and will allow the clutch to engage and work normally at low-power, but will break free and make a grinding sound when given more throttle.

if it is the trans what are the need upgrades while i am in there.
and on the other side what would be the best clutch for a dd that sees light track duty. budget may be tight if it is the trans. but if not it not a problem.

Upgrade the 3-4 shift fork to the steel one and replace the 3-4 stamped steel keys to billet steel keys.
I offer a Stage 2 T56 build for $680 that includes these upgrades, as well as freshening up the rest of the trans.
I recommend the Diamond Stage 2 clutch (dual friction). It's very streetable, and is more than strong enough for occasional track use. It drives almost like stock with no chatter at all. Price is $409 for the basic clutch kit. If you want a lightweight chromoly billet flywheel and/or slave cylinder, I can provide both for an additional $350.
Get both the tranny and clutch and I'll take $100 off the total. Check my sig for the websites with all the details.
Hopefully for you its just the clutch, though. Best of luck!!

does that price include new bearing, seals. what kind of warranty do you offer on the trans rebuild. i am fully capable of do this myself but for the price and a decent warranty i am definitely considering.

It includes all new rings, keys/springs, seals, fork pads, billet 3-4 keys, steel 3-4 fork and labor. If anything else is damaged, then add the cost of the parts.

Thank goodness. Did you drain the tranny and check the fluid anyway?

yeah i drained it and i removed the tail housing so i could do the bushing and seal and i could look down through the hole the fluid flow through and see the gears and they are still in tacked. also there was no chunks or excessive metal on the magnet just the usual that you would see. tdp giving real good price on clutch kit so will be ordering tomorrow. figure why trans is out i would pull rear and subframe and put in the delrin bushings and fab up a diff brace and do some painting.
