well i started with a PC and moved on to the Flex....PC has no chance of burning through the paint while the Flex, even though it may be a small chance, has the ability ot burn through paint....especially on edges since the clear is thinner there....the safe route is see if you can pick up a used PC and get comfortable with that....once you get a feel for the polishing game and feel comfortable enough move up to the Flex....a lot of guys on the Adam's forum are moving up to the Flex after putting down a lot of hours on the PC....if it was me i would start with the PC....you will be able to get pretty close to the same results but it will take longer because of the safety factor.

The PC is the best choice if you're a newb... and it can get you 99.9% to perfect if you're paint is in decent shape to start, just takes time and the right technique. The upside is that you can't damage your paint with it.
If you're only going to have one machine the PC is the one to have. The flex is great, but I still use my PC most of the time as I don't need the added power to do the light correction work my truck requires.
For a good side by side of the capabilities of each machine check out this video:

Keep in mind an additional pass or 2 with the PC on the other side and it would be getting the same result as the flex, and thats starting with very trashed paint.
