Default brake pedal switch purpose

I know the brake pedal switch disconnects the lock out on the torque converter.

Was this put in to stop power braking or for longevity of the trans?

If it didn't unlock the convertor, it would kill the engine everytime you stopped. It would be like trying to stop a car with a manual tranny without pushing in the clutch.

I think that switch also turns off your cruise control, if you have it.

It is used to turn on the brake light to tell the guy you just beat that you are slowing down for him to race again...
