Default The Right Cam? EPS

I have a 70 chevelle with an 04 GTO engine and auto trans. I have stock 243 heads on it and I am wanting to get a bigger cam. I have been looking at the EPS LS 222/226 .597 I .598 E 113 LSA. Is this a good cam for the street, I don't plan on taking it to the dragstrip very often. I am wanting something with good street manners and not have to change the springs every year. I am not looking for a certain rwhp but is 400 realistic?

Patrick-G will do custom cam ground on EPS lobes to best fit your needs.

It will have good street manors. My EPS 226/230 runs nice and smooth w/ zero cam surge and pulls hard through-out the entire RPM range. You will love the EPS cam!

It should be. I would install it straight up. It should give you a little over 8.1-8.2 DCR (depending on the ramp which has been reported as 49-50...) with 243 heads, stockish thickness head gasket and stock bottom end. It'll also only have -2 degrees of overlap at 0.050. By the graphs of the various people who have run it, it makes good power, and is pretty strong in the mid range up through low/mid 6000's. One thing I would be interested in seeing is these lobes on a ~110LSA on a car with 243's. I don't know if anyone has run something like that, but I would be interested to see where torque and power peak would end up.

While the numbers in the link above were certainly good cam only (241 heads), the car was a manual... but you do have the advantage of 243s. I think you could hit 400's with the 243's if your exhaust and tune is good...

This thread might be more pertinent, except they used those lobes on a 115 LSA for a sort of sleeper effect:
Baby EPS cam lays down 430rwhp/415rwtq

edit: the DCR numbers were a result of plugging in things in the VE Calculator stickied in Advanced Tech... I am not sure that it is exactly the gospel, (valve events are certainly golden) just because as good as it is there are some sort of shenanigans going on regarding static compression as calculated using standard specs for the LS1 or LS6; they seem to be 0.1 high compared to the GM ratings. I don't know what this anomaly is the result of (I predict it has something to do with the deck height and head gasket thickness though, but I am not an expert... going back to old posts this issue was brought up and I don't think anyone came up with a definitive answer. However, 0.1 difference in compression isn't something to obsess over I don't suppose).

My exhaust is edelbrock swap headers with magnaflow full duals. What other upgrades should I be looking at such as, springs, pushrods etc: I was looking for a good tuner in the St Louis area but chicago and indianapolis possible.

Any cam swap is going to need springs and pushrods. Depending on the miles you might want to replace/upgrade the lifters, oil pump, and timing chain. Good luck.

I gather the more DCR = more cylinder pressure = more torque! Does anyone know how much is too much or what will work with 93 pump gas?

Yeah thats what I thought, I was just wondering what brand or type is recommended. I was considering PAC 1518 for springs and probably TSP pushrods.

You can easily run a dcr of 8.5 to 1 on pump gas 93 so I would shoot for that.

Exactly. You can probably get away with 8.7 if your tune is spot on.

Up till 9 is Ok with the right plugs and tune. I run 9 DCR and 12:1 SCR with no issues.

I run 8.8:1 DCR with 11:1 static compression on 92 pump gas with no issues. Unported 243's, custom 224 cam and 444 rwhp.

How can you calculate the dynamic compression ratio of the EPS lobes. Do you know the ramp rates and the duration @ .006"? .050" numbers do not mean everything.

Interesting... hadn't seen anyone say over 8.7 before now.

Magic... and I mentioned something about that in my original post in fact.

The ramp is supposed to be 49 for the 222 lobe, AFAIK. I have not personally analyzed one though.
