to those that have done this. how hard is it? is there a write up somewhere besides a Haynes manual?
this will be on a 1998 Z28

why do you want to remove the tank? not very hard at all. just remove screws at the neck and bolts to the straps. alot of people opt to cutting the gas tank door to gain access to the pump w/o having to cut or remove exhaust

Search for 'fuel pump trap door' threads, like nemss1 mentioned.
Cut a hole from the inside of the rear hatch. Details instructions on here somewhere on where to cut & everything.
It's a LOT quicker/easier.

Ive done the trap door and pulled tanks but ive never put a tank back in lol
Trap door is easy, just be careful how deep you cut with the cut off wheel, be really careful not to bend the fuel level sender arm pulling it out, and use silicone to seal off the plate when you put it back on.

I would use tin snips instead of a cut off wheel!

^^^thats what i used. i was just careful and barely cut into the metal just to make sure i didnt cut anything i was suppose to. pretty easy w a dremel. cuts smoothly and very quickly. i had mine cut in a matter of minutes

'trap door' is great. did it to mine about 2003. during a trip to florida in 06 (live in Ohio),fuel pump went (had a spare with me),replaced it in less than 15 mins off of I95.

Good write up in the latest GM High tech.

Don't forget gloves, goggles and stuff. Might seem like common sense, but when I did my trap door I was shirtless, had sunglasses on and no gloves, lol. I've never done any kind of body work so watching the sparks fly and my dremel actually strain for once was kinda unnerving.
Man those sparks stung...
