We're having a debate on my local forum as to whom is the fastest. I've got a Samsung Captivate, which is better than any of the 4 generations of iPhones I've had, jailbroken or not.

I have 4G on my Evo, although in Midland we do not have the capabilities yet. I have Sprint, thus the Evo. I will do a 3G speed test as soon as I can. Although I will tell you the 3G is nowhere as fast as your results.

Mine's 3G as well. I've heard 3.5G is nice, noone has full fledged 4G at this moment, but they're all marketing it a such.

And according to a link posted, AT&T was slowest and I think Sprint was second, I'll see if I can find it.

I'm confused. Are you talking about phones or network speed?

Network speed is independent of the device. Certain devices will seem slower due to said devices not having the appropriate radio to support the network's latest speed upgrades.

Bottom line is: T-Mobile USA has the fastest wireless cellular network in the country at the moment with its 21Mbps HSPA+. In 2011, they will double that to 42Mbps HSPA+ and then will move forward to 84Mbps and then 168Mbps.

Remember that these are bits and not bytes and that they are also theoretical max. download speeds.

No, it's not "4G" like they claim. In fact no one has "4G" yet. The ITU stated that IEEE 802.16m (WiMAX 2) and LTE Advanced are to be considered 4G technology. We can give Sprint some slack for claimning "4G" because their WiMAX network was well underway before the ITU came to this decision. T-Mobile USA and Verizon (and maybe AT&T if they dare) have no excuse. In fact, T-Mobile USA began touting their network as "HSPA+" and "4G-like speeds." It wasn't until their 3rd generation MyTouch (which went through many names) was released that they decided to jump on this "4G" bandwagon. Shame on them.

The beautiful thing about HSPA+ is that it builds directly upon HSDPA and HSUPA technology. So, even though your phone may not have an HSPA+ radio, your HSDPA 7.2Mbps phone will see an increase in speed as you'll be more than likely to reach that 7.2Mbps theoretical maximum speed due to the network being pushed way beyond that limit.

I put the device so everyone would know, I know it's dependant on that. And let me change the rules, fastest 3G, 3.5G is rare at the moment.

Lol JP_GXP, that study is flawed in two areas. 1) is from 2009 (not really its fault) and 2) they're providing averages from different sets of users.

AT&T: 901 Kbps - 8,153 test takers
Sprint: 1,598 Kbps - 1,570 test takers
T-Mobile: 1,793 Kbps - 1,189 test takers
Verizon: 1,940 Kbps - 856 test takers

I'm sure we all know how averages work, lol.

And it's hard to only test "3G" because like I explained about HSPA+ (which AT&T also has, albeit 14Mbps), even if the phone doesn't have the radio, existing HSDPA and HSUPA phones will benefit from the network increase. That includes iPhones, Samsung Captivate (Galaxy S Android), HTC Surround (Windows Phone 7), etc.

I've seen 4 Mb/s on my rooted, ROM'd EVO with the 4G radio turned on in Los Angeles. And that's with a weak signal. As the 4G implementation becomes more widespread, I expect faster speeds.
