Default Air Lid - Is It Worth the Hype?

I was looking at the FTRA and they have a pkg. deal with an air lid. Is an air lid really going to flow more air? I mean if it is just that the top of the lid is smooth, I could do that to mine with a dremel. Or is the opening also bigger towards the MAF. Any pics of a stock one next to an aftermarket one would be great. It just seems like another overpriced SLP product or something to that effect. Is it really worth the $70 - 100 more? Thanks.

The lid problems are at the neck (sharp corner
that disrupts inlet flow and effectively "shrouds"
a large portion of the filter face from effective
contribution at high flow) and the resonator in
outlet neck (turbulence, on purpose, for shame!).
You can bondo the holes but you can't really fix
the P.O.S. stock design without a new mold. And
various folks have. Relative to the paper element
the stock lid is roughly 2X as much pressure drop
and the aftermarket lids are zero. The MAF, by
my measurements, was not quite twice the drop
of the stock lid (but close) and deserves to be at
least descreened, going by flow/pressure alone.
But I didn't have a descreened one to test at the
time to quantify the improvement there, and there
are other considerations.

The size of the outlet opening (aside from special
85mm-MAF-sized ones) is identical to stock; it's
just elimination of stupidities in between the filter
and the outlet.

A lid, is a lid, is a lid.

They all perform so marginally close that it's not worth debating.

Pick one based on price, appearence or precieved quality.

This is the single most asked question ever. Down the road you will ask which cam.

Wilwaxu is right. A lid is a lid is a lid. Aftermarket lids aren't the bottleneck in the intake.

Lids work great for the money. They are all basically the same, and make about 12-15 rwhp on a stock car. Just find the one you like the price or looks the best and buy it.

Check out the for sale forum here.. People sell lids for pretty good deals.
That's where I got mine!

tsp lids fit well with the holley filter. Fitment was the big issue i wanted. Didn't want to deal with "seals" or lids that take finessing to keep on right.

those smoked lids do impress alot of people i must admit.

A lid is a cheap mod. If you think they are overpriced you may want to stop modding now

if you want some more hp to make up for that lid for a week pull that flowdisaster off or get a cutout.

well if you can, return the slp flow pac, its not worth the money. direct flow lid, filter, and FTRA can be had for cheaper.

that kind of attitude will cost you, your car aint going no where. researching mods and spending money wisely goes along way . i have the slp flow pac, its not worth the money they charge even at 25 bucks off.

Abosultely agree and some things that people rave
are useless too. The reason people are against it
is the big ticket item is the MAF which is a useless mod
unless your pushing MAJOR hp and tuning alot.
You might even LOSE hp with the MAF.
The bellows too will only cause you grief unless you
like your lid popping off.

Just so you know, you can't trust manufacturers claims of
HP gains, especailly SLP which claims 25 for catback
and 40hp/60tq for headers both of which are ridiculous.

The only thing I will be able to trust is what I see on they dyno when I get my car on it. I'm not saying I'm going to die just because I want my car modded... but also I have looked at some other options for improving my car.

You can't trust people who have been there done that
and give you feedback?
So why do you look at message boards.
You can gain alot from what others have done.

Best of luck with your car.

theres no doubt that your mods will gain you hp verified by the dyno, but you can spend 300 on the slp flow pac and flowmaster and put down 320rwhp or spend less money with a direct flow lid, FTRA, fernco and another catback and put down the same if not more rwhp.

i dont know about you but i like to get the most hp for my dollar.
