Tools & Fabrication - What 2 post lift to go with?

Just closed on my house with a nice big detached 2 1/2 car garage behind it and it has a high ceiling for a lift so the question is what 2 post lift should I go with? Anybody know of a good brand that won't break the bank and should I go with symmetric or asymmetric? Thanks

You left out the most important information... your budget.

Would like to stay $2000 or below.

I have found some at www.eagleequip.com and some others made by prokar that come in right around $1500 but I don't know if they are any good. I don't want one thats going to drop my car on my face.

Asymmetric is the way to go. Being able to open the doors and get in and out of the car is nice.

My dad picked up a used 9000lb asymmetric for less than $1000 from a shop that was closing. I believe it's a Forward and it has worked flawlessly for 5+ years.

I really want one that has the bar that goes between the two posts at the top so its not on the floor and I want one that goes at least 76" high as I am 6'4" and need to be able to stand under the car not hunched over when its up in the air. We had an asymmetric one at the auto hobby shop on Hill AFB in Utah and it was always a pain to get my car lined up on the pads properly with that one. The symmetic ones were a lot easier I remember.

I have a Forward hoist and it is the nicest I have seen. I bought mine from a local guy here in iowa but I believe they are about 2500 new. I bought mine used. We had these at the dealership I worked at.

I really wish I could have gotten one that had the overhead guides and not the ones running on the floor. It wound up being about 4" too tall for my shop.

My work-around has been laying down plywood making the working surface and the plate the same height on the floor. Keeping the plywood within the footprint of the car has made it almost invisible.

I have zero issues lining up an asymmetric lift. I do however have issues with whacking my door on the post of my buddy's symmetrical lift. Every time I pull a car onto his lift I look out the driver's window and say "Ok. Now what?"

I then cover myself in KY and slither my 5'9" 170lb frame out of the car while still managing to touch the door to the post :bang:

At the end of the day, any lift is better than no lift. If you go with a symmetric style just invest in some padding for the posts.

I was lucky. They had a distribution center about an hour away from me and was able to pick it up.

I paid a couple guys $350 to install it.

Ok, anyone else have a rough estimate of shipping one of these?

Do you guys like the bendpak lifts? They seem a little more expensive but have free shipping.

i bought 2 of mine from greg smith equipment. think shipping was 150-200 from indy to pittsburgh. first oen i bougth 4 years ago and bought another one this year. but if have the height get lift with no floor plate. my last lift i got paid 2k delivered. can go cheaper but i wanted single point release and taller lift.
