Default fuel return line in top of tank...pipe inside or not?

planning out my fuel system in my regal and had a quick question about the fuel return line. im gonna drill a small hole and put a -6 bulkhead fitting in the top of the tank. my question is do i need to have a pipe hooke up to this fitting on the inside of the tank or can i have it just return right into the tank with no worries or airation(sp) or causing any other problems. i never race the car on anything less then 3/4 of a tank so i would not think this would be a problem but i have been reading where people are stating you should have a line in the tank to avoid any problems. curious if any pipes bolt to a bulkhead fitting? should i just throw a 90degree fitting on the inside of tank on the other side of bulkhead and have it hit the side of tank before splashing into tank? thanks guys

we have always just run the return into the side of the filler neck . seems to work without any issues .
