I wouldn't totally rely on one, but they can be effective if you use it in conjunction with good common sense. For instance, if you're out traveling on a road all alone without any traffic and an officer is waiting down the road to tag you, then your radar detector is totally useless. Today's radar units are so far advanced in comparison to units of years past. There use to be a time when radar guns were constantly running which would make it extremely easy for radar detectors to sniff them out. Now with 'Instant On' technology, it makes it a lot more difficult for radar detectors to be effective.

I had a V1 in my truck and Camaro. I sold it earlier this year. I mostly drive around town and had very little use for one. Most of the cops around my area have laser now and as great as the V1 is, laser is very hard to detect until you've been hit with it. I loved the V1, but I don't really need it. Plus, if I ever got pulled over for any reason I had to hide it since they're illegal in VA.

That's your call. I always got a good warning if there was a cop behind me with the V1.

are you asking for opinions on a radar detector for use while street racing? i hope not

I have a V1, I don't use it to allow me to speed everywhere. It's more or less used when i go on trips where the average 10mph over the speed limit just doesn't cut it. Radar detectors are a "get what you pay for" purchase. If they are illegal in your state, then if/when you get caught it's only going to hurt you more.

I have a v1. They are the best radar detector you can have for laser detection. I have picked up laser scatter from other cars around me that the cop hit before hitting me. If there are no cars around and your tagged by laser, you are busted. But if there are cars infront of you close by, there is a good chance if he hits one of them 1st. the v1 will pick it up. I run the v1 in my goat w/the bel zr4 laser shifter/jammer. Laser veil on the lights and on a cover on the front plate to take out the reflection. so my front end is pretty much blacked out. Usually when I do get hit with laser, they will keep the gun on me until I pass them. Im sure Iam getting a jam to gun on them. I take my radar/laser defenses seriously.lol....If you go to radardetector.net you can learn alot on there....

A v1 isn't a beltronics. It's made by the company valentine. All made in the usa. The laser jammer you can get from beltronics or new off of ebay, but no warranty. I bought mine from there atleast 2 yrs. ago, and it's holding up great. You can get the jammer from 350-450 dollars. There are better jammers out there, I used the laserviel antireflection liquid to make up for the lower power of the jammers, but it works great for me. You can get a laser interceptor jammer they are the best, but run from 750-1200 bucks. or you can get a blinder laserjammer for around 450.00
I don't believe best buy carries the jammer. If you look at my pictures of my front end, you can see the jammer setup. one on each side of the front plate, and one on the front plate.

If it's for a fbody, I would just go with the bel zr4 and v1 close to a grand for the setup. But I haven't had a ticket in yrs. The v1 saves me every night on my way to work. Hopefully I haven't confused you.

I think the second post is very informational. You can't rely on a radar detector as your only means of cop detection. You have to use a lot of common sense. I have a Passport 9500i which is great because it has GPS, so it locks out your false alarms so it does not go off every time you pass a Walgreens. As for laser, the problem with detecting it is it uses such a small point of contact on the car so the cops just aim it at your headlight or somewhere they know your detector is not. And jammers are illegal in most states so makes sure is has an off button for when you are the only car on the road. Because it is not going to be hard for the cops to figure out who they need to give a big ticket to for a jammer.

This.... Jammers are illegal in about 10-15 states. Oklahoma is one of them. In the states where jammers are not illegal, you could get a ticket from jamming them, but it will be dismissed. Because Laser is controlled by the FDA not the FCC.
So where the jammers are legal, they are legal to use, but it is very wise to shut it off once you get down to speed. I just like messing with them here in ks. Since they are legal, every time I jam one, which is only about 5 times a yr. that I do get hit, they don't seem to know what to do, they just keep on shooting at the other cars once I get by.

And like the 2nd. poster said about instant on radar, if you get hit with it your screwed. My rule of thumb is if I can't see a car atleast 1/4 in front of me, going the same direction. Which some people call a rabbit, I don't run anything over 5mph over psl. Usually the cop running instant on will hit the car in front of you. Not all the time, but most of the time. If you don't see a car infront of you then I wouldn't speed too much.

I own an Escort Passport 8500. I like it. I don't drive around like an ******* anymore but it's good to have just in case your mind is somewhere else for a moment while driving and you end up doing 73 instead of 65. I've seen some CHPs pull people over for as little as 3 miles over the limit around the SFV.

..... Also, I know where all the CHPs USUALLY hide out here in the SFV with their guns. And that's because at some point or another, even when doing the speed limit, my detector has caught their signal. I'll look in the side or rear view mirror, and there they are! ... I'll commit it to memory and make sure I'm careful if I ever go near THAT spot again. And sure enough, 6 out of 10 times, someone is always there if it's around the same time everyday.

Yeah when you are the only car on the road there is no way to get around a ticket if you are speeding no matter what you got.

It's up to you on the jammer. But they are illegal in Ok. I don't think I would risk it. As for the radar detector. If you live in a small town or do alot of highway driving I would go with the V1 for the long range and laser sensitivity, and the arrows are a nice plus, so you don't have to guess where the radar/source is coming from. If you live in a good size city, and have alot of stores/automatic doors, I would prob. get a unit like the passport 9500ix so you can use the gps option to shut out the false alarms. They are both great units. The V1 is really sensitive and will go off more then the passport or bel units. Of course Im biased towards the v1. But I do run a bel 985 in my wifes car, I have had it for around 5 yrs. It's a great unit also.

Yeah I do a lot of driving in town and love the fact that my 9500i blocks out all the false alarms. I have road in friends cars with a V1 and it is always making noise it is hard to take it serious sometimes.

Well, I was caught with laser late last night. I picked it up on my Beltronics RX65. I slowed down and started looking around, wondering if it was a false alert, since I don't get accurate laser very often (I get it every morning while driving in direct sunlight, with the sun in front of me. Otherwise, the unit works perfectly). It was pitch black on I-95 last night. I was the rabbit, with a cluster behind me. I spotted the trooper shortly thereafter, and naturally, I was pulled over. Time to get a Blinder M27 or Beltronics RX75. The blinder has a jammer, so that's what I'll probably go with.

Yea do what this guy said right there in the bold^^^. You have to have common sense with a radar detector. I bought my beltronics 995 not to long ago and it works awesome. 80% of cops radar is still have the basic. so 20% have the lazer. I know no cops in my town or the 3 towns close by have lazer detection
