Default Build thread: 87 Notch Mustang - Ai 416ci LS3, PG, E85

***Updated around page 6 with initial track results and video***

It thought I'd post of my progress and pictures for people that may be doing similar builds. Some of you may recognize this car because I bought it as a rolling chassis from Kevin (97'-lt1) on the forum. He put a lot of hard work into the car and now it will change to into something that fits my needs. The car will be used for 1/8 drag racing only because of the strict smog laws in CA.

Here was the car in its previous build thread:
https://ls1tech.com/forums/conversio...sx-87-fox.html

Car:
87 Notch Back Mustang
Manual everything
Aje k-member and Tubular everything
Kooks 1 7/8 -3.5
10pt Cage
8.8 with 4.11 gears
Tons of weight removal

Engine:
416ci LS3 built by Advanced Induction - 714hp na
L92 heads
HR cam
Prosystems E85 Carb

Engine build thread:
Advanced Induction (board sponsor --->) built me a great engine that makes tons of power for this little car. They made a post about the build.
https://ls1tech.com/forums/dynamomet...-714hp-na.html

Drivetrain:
Built PG with transbrake
8in 5400 Ultimate Converter

My plans include some more weight reduction. The car came with over 250lbs of ballast in the car which has all been removed now. I am also swapping from a full exhaust with x-pipe to dumps off the headers. The engine is also an aluminum block rather than iron. I'm shooting for 2650lbs with me in the drivers seat. The car previously weighed 28XXlbs without the ballast.

I changed the fuel system out to a much larger pump and return style regulator to support the E85 fuel needs. I will be installing a PE 4450 pump with 10an feed and 8an return.

I will be running an NA setup for awhile until I learn the car. Eventually I will step up to a 150-200shot of nitrous.

Pictures of what it looked like when it arrived:

I've gotten some work done but it seems the little things are slowing the build down. I've had trouble tracking down bolts, fittings etc. Summit and Jegs always seem to ship my orders in multiple (days apart) shipments which makes it hard to build a fuel system etc.

Today I detailed the car's exterior and installed the engine. I will be making the exhaust dumps with 3.5 inch bullets tomorrow and mounting the new fuel pump.

I've got some wiring to change around too. Hopefully my AN fittings and converter bolts show up soon.

Why would you stick a UNPROVEN engine ( LS gen) in a drag car? Might as well install a MOPAR slant 6

Subscribing!!! Wow that car looks fantastic!!! 700+ hp in that light platform should run about mid 9's or so!! Awesome!!

Btw, kill some time filling the shotgun blasts under the hood if you can match the paint! Looks 100 times better smoothed!

I have some paint and body plans for the car and I will likely do the engine bay clean up then. The holes look terrible, but I plan to race it a bit before I work on making it pretty.

Got the power glide, stall, and driveshaft installed.

Had some problems sorting out the stall spacing because of the snout length. I only need the spacer for my nitrous converter and not for my NA stall. I couldn't find the specs for the snout length so I just had to try it out.

With all the big parts in, I am going to do my fuel and electronics next. Need to figure out where to mount the coils.

I have bad luck. One of the torque converter bolt holes stripped out! =( Took the converter out and will drop it off to get it repaired.

I think one of the bolt holes in the Hughes flexplate was slightly off center which put stress on the bolt/threads.

Fuel system is almost finished and the wiring is under way.

Looks sharp.

What ignition are you going to run? What are you going to do for gauges? What does the interior look like?

Put a cat or two on it and it might pass smog.

Haha

I'm running an MSD 6012 with stock LS1 coils. For gauges I have an autometer tach, water, fuel, oil pressure, and trans temp. I plan to pick up a wideband the records rpm and a few other functions for use at the track. The interior is all black. 10pt cage, Kirkey, and not much else other than a bottle mount and shifter. It is relatively stock looking with door panels etc, just empty. I will snap pics once I get it all put back together.

Smog =(

I believe it is a factory color. Unfortuantely I can't tell you what it is because I don't know for sure.

It has been a rough week with broken fittings and stripped bolts.

I've gotten the torque converter repaired after stripping a bolt hole when the flex plate hole was slightly out of line. I broke the water temp sensor in the head and had to wait for a new adapter.

As it currently sits, the whole drive train is in and ready to go. The fuel system is getting finished up this week. I need to mount this huge fuel pump and have been making a bracket to support it.

Once the pump is finished, I will be mounting the coils and starting it up. The coils are going under the dash with the plug wires running through the firewall. A few odds and ends left, but I hope to go racing soon.

One of the holes on my hughes flexplate was off too but I fixed it before I screwed up the threads on the converter. Looks like they need to adjust their math a little on their build template.

Update:

All systems are installed and ready to go. I did a ton of wiring, looming, and routing on the car.

I was going to fill and purge the fuel system but left the spout for the can in my car trailer. I'm also waiting on my shorter throttle cable, bracket, and some fittings to connect the carb to the fuel lines from the regulator.

I will have pictures by the end of the weekend. Maybe a video.
