Default Wade Phillips headed to Houston?

From Yahoo! Sports
The Houston Texans have had a pretty disappointing season, going 5-10 with one game to play. Things are expected to get shaken up on the coaching staff, according to the Dallas Morning News, and one of the additions may be someone Dallas Cowboys fans are very familiar with.

Wade Phillips, whose record as coach of the Cowboys was 1-7 this season before getting fired, this after leading the team to first place in the NFC East last season. The Dallas Morning News reports that Phillips may be moving into the role of defensive coordinator in Houston, replacing Frank Bush Sr.

Phillips is under contract with the Cowboys through next season so if he gets hired, the Texans would relieve some of the Cowboys' financial obligation to him.
Phillips does have a good defensive brain if you ask me. He's just not a good head coach. The Texans defense is ranked 3rd to last in the NFL. They still have a long ways to be a playoff team. What do y'all Houston folk think?

I liked his defensive scheme at the end of last season. I just don't know wtf happened this season, he started scheming too soft, and every blitz he called was too predictable. It was either man blitz, or a cover 2 with ware and spencer coming off the edge.

Not sure how his 3-4 defense would fare with Houston's 4-3 defensive personnel. It seems to me, as if for Wade's D to work well, you have to have a stout secondary (which was one of the reason's his defense was good in san diego with Jammer and Cromartie).

I wish him well wherever he goes. He's a player's coach, and maybe defensive coordinator is more of his style.

The Houston press is furiously spinning this as a good move. I really don't see this working out at all. Kubiak has proven that he just isn't capable of being a head coach. The Texans might get a little better next year with a DC who understands football, but it will be interesting to see what 3-4 Phillips does with the current personnel. The Texans have nobody capable of playing nose tackle in the NFL today.

Just wait until the Texans have their first slow starting game next season. There will be hell to pay.

I just think McNair doesn't want to pay two coaches next year (Kubiak has another year on his contract). If Gruden and Cowher find work elsewhere this offseason, it will have been a HUGE missed opportunity.

Or there might not even be an NFL season next year, but I really doubt it.

*Yawn*. Wade Phillips is as about as inspiring as cooked pasta. More of the same old Texans if McNair sticks with Kubiak and he hires Phillips. He deserves what he gets if he does this.

Phillips has grown soft. We need coaches that push these players, and make them responsible for their own actions. I'm so sick of seeing Kubiak on TV, sucking up for the press and saying they had bad luck, excuse after excuse. Nobody on that team seems to just man up and admit it is their own fault. When you are paid millions to do a job, and you can't do it well, you need to hit the road. Simple.

Super Gay. The problems start with Gary Kubiak.

A buddy of mine sent this to the Texans. It includes several points I'd make in this thread myself, so I will just save some time and paste his words here.

Hire Cowher, Dungy, Gruden or any REAL COACH...and let him build his own
staff!

Kubiak, Smith and nearly every coach must go.

. There is an overall refusal to reverse course, try something new,
etc

. Poor player evaluation and mediocre drafts

. Loyalty to certain players to a fault

. Eugene Wilson should not be starting at FS

. Kareem Jackson should not have been thrown on an island

. Jacque Reeves should have been retained and taught to look back for
the ball, unless there is something else we don't know about

. Brice McCain should have been cut a long time ago

. A veteran CB (5-10mil range) should have been signed this past
offseason

. A veteran DT (5-10mil range) should have been signed this offseason

. We should have made some trades at the trade deadline when it was
clear we had tremendous issues with our defense

. Poor in-game strategy

. Scripted plays seem to directly correlate to the notoriously
slow-starting offense

. One of very few teams in NFL that do not let the QB audible at the
line of scrimmage

. Uber-predictable runs up the middle (and into the pile) in poorly
chosen situations

. Slants and outs for 5 yards on 3rd and 10, with a QB who often
bounces that ball on a roll out (known weak pass for him, why call that
play?)

. Poor play calling in crucial situations...leading RB in NFL, yet
passing 3 straight downs from our own 1 yard line

. Our defensive backfield plays 10-15 yard padded zone in incorrect
situations, and our safeties appear to be lost..i.e. the Jets final drive

. Crazy decisions like passing on a 50 yard field goal attempt in OT
vs. Washington

. Teaching defensive backs to slap the ball down instead of catch it.
Batting down is for when you CAN'T catch it!

. Too conservative when we have a small lead...need to put teams away

. Poor clock management

. Refusal to call timeouts at the end of the first half, as if Kubiak
believes they carry over! I have seen this multiple times where Kubiak is
apparently trying to move the ball, with 3 timeouts, yet does not call ANY
until we are under 1 minute. This makes no sense.

There was no growing soft he has always been a soft coach. I do agree that they need coaches that push the players instead of patting them on the back saying its ok... You will get it next time... The one thing that is for sure is that the Texans need a change of some kind and they need it now. I will take anything as long as we get some change.

Starts off in defense then "slips" into head coaching position.

I see it.

Just remember, Wade Phillips has been the DC for the Cowboys for the last two seasons. They're secondary has sucked. The Texans secondary has sucked. How is this a good idea? When your team has been ahead going into the 4th quarter in this many games, and lost this many, that's coaching! Kubiak needs to go! Granted, Bush has been a failure, but Kubiak has shown, he's a bad manager of the game, and the clock. It's all about fundamentals, and Kubiak has been shown as lacking there! We need Bill Cowher! Btw, we are on his top 3 teams he wants to coach in 2011! How can McNair not at l east interview him b4 making a decision is beyond me! Hopefully, if McNair goes thru with this idiotic idea, the Texans fans will stay home, and fail to sell out Texans games. Maybe hitting him in pocketbook will teach him the lesson.
