Default 10 bolt

so im a noob when it comes to rears. what i want to do is beef up my stock 10 bolt for the street stock class for the shootout. my problem is it was bolted up to a 3.4 and has 1 tire fire. i want to make it posi but keep it as stock as possible. what can i do to achieve this? and i will need it to stand up to 300hp.

find a z28 or trans am model f-body at a junkyard or search the "for sale" midwest section and just swap rears. thats prolly the easiest way.

By far your cheapest option is to pick up a take-out rear.

any 93-02 will work. the only difference is the 3 and 4 channel rear. you need to find a 3 channel(a car without the traction control.) it will have a thing on top of the pumpkin where a 4 channel has a sensor for each wheel.

from waukesha btw.

Just to clear that up a bit, you need a 3-channel ABS rear (not series carrier).

A 2-3 series might be mistaken as a 2-3 series carrier, which is a type of posi.

Everything else is right though.

The "carrier" is just that - it carries the gear. Basically the posi unit. Cars with a 2.73 (or 3.08 for some V6 cars) came with a 2-series carrier. Anything with a 3.23 and up gear ratio had a 3-series carrier. You can't use gears designed for a 3-series carrier in a 2-series carrier, and vice versa. This really won't pertain to you if you pick up a rear out of another car. Just make sure it's from a V8 car. Ideally you want a rear out of a 94+ M6 car (came with 3.42s) and ALL V8s came with posi.

A 3-channel ABS rear uses a single sensor on top of the differential, while a four channel ABS car has a sensor on each wheel. As mentioned, you want a 3-channel rear (with the sensor in the differential). 3 channel ABS came on NON-TCS cars.

If you use a 98+ rear you will have to make new brake lines.

not a problem for me. forgot to mention im doing abs delete so im not worried about abs. i would really like a disc brake setup on the posi though. my current diff is drum. is there anything i would have to change or can i just simply connect the lines?

Easiest thing to do is mark the brake rotor and turn the pinion yoke and count the revolutions. Every 3.42 turns of the yoke should result in exactly one turn of the axle.

No autos came with 3.42s - only V6 cars with the Y87 package. Autos either had 2.73s or 3.23s, nothing else.

The difference between 3.42 and 3.23 is still substantial enough to tell by rotating. You'll see!
